Lindh Pär and Björn Johansson biography
Well, it's not easy to make a bio of Par Lindh & Bjorn Johansson because we're not talking about a band but about a project to release one (first) Tolkien related album, Bilbo and later "Dreamsongs from the Middle Earth". This two friends and excellent musicians had worked together for a long time, Bjorn even played guitars in the first PAR LINDH PROJECT" album "Gothic Impressions, being an important part of it. It's unnecessary to talk about Par Lindh and his long career with bands as ANTENNA BAROQUE, the Symphonic Trio VINCEBUS EREPTUM, his solo career as Church Organ virtuoso, Keyboardist, Classical Pianist, drummer and President of the Swedish Art Rock Society plus responsible of PAR LINDH PROJECT, so lets talk a bit about the incredible guitar player called Bjorn Johansson, who is not as well known as the Organ wizard but is also transcendental for Scandinavian Symphonic. Bjorn is mainly a guitar player but as Mike Oldfield he's more than proficient in almost every one it's enough to mention that in his recordings with Par Lindh he plays classical guitars, 12 string guitars, 6 string steel guitars, electric guitars, slide guitars, sitar guitar, zither, Jews harp, mandolins, bouzoki, bassoon, tin whistle, low whistle, Akai S2000 sampler, Giga studio sampler, Access Virus virtual analogue synthesizer, jingle bells, vibraslap & cabasa Bass. After releasing Gothic Impressions, Pär Lindh approached Bjorn because of his great interest in releasing a Tolkien based album called "Bilbo" (1996), in the vein of Bo Hansson's Lord of the Rings but with a clear Medieval and Baroque influence so beloved by both musicians. In this first project they counted with Magdalena Hagsberg and Anna Scmidtdz in the flutes. In 2004 they rejoin again to release their second joint project called Dreamsomngs from Middle Earth, again with members of Par Lindh Project as Magdalena Hagsberg and Lovisa Stenberg plus Roine Stolt from THE FLOWER KINGS who plays bass in the track "Dream Three"" This album has a more Classic Symphonic approach, giving a different perspective to Tolkien's narrations. Los Canarios biography (from Progarchives.com)
LOS CANARIOS was a Spanish band that started playing back in the late 60's. At the beginning, they played Soul and R&B influenced music, singing mostly in English. Recorded in the Seventies, "Circlos" shows an adaptation of VIVALDI's "Four Seasons" with a rock and Hispanic flavour. This is a concept album with an interesting story line that goes from the creation of the Earth to the Apocalypse in 2700 A.C.

The music reminds of this era, with a predominant Hammond organ, a blend of rock and classical music in the style of THE NICE and other EKSEPTION. This album is a heavy and dynamic work in its own right with plenty of synth and organ work as well as guitar. Vocals (in English) are heard throughout but I'd say the album is dominated by instrumental sections. "Ciclos" is a classic of the Spanish progressive scene. But otherwise I have to agree with other prog fans that this is a classic.

"'Insurgentes' was an important step for me into something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it’s more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create “journeys in sound” I guess you could call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There’s everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz –inspired piece. I've actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records"^[6]

Children of the Bong was an electronic band formed in the early 1990s by Rob Henry and Daniel Goganian. They signed to Planet Dog Records in 1994 and released one album, Sirius Sounds, as well as a couple of tracks on Planet Dog compilations. The band recorded a Peel Session for DJ John Peel on BBC Radio 1 on 26 April 1994 [1]

The group split up shortly after the release of the album. Rob Henry went on to form a band called Euphonic and now plays in a band called Neech. Daniel Goganian went on to study at the National Film and Television School and now works in the film and television industry for Savalas Audio Post Production in Glasgow, Scotland. He also plays samba percussion for the Paraiso School of Samba in London.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock group King Crimson, originally released in 1973. This album is the debut of King Crimson's third incarnation - arguably their most forward-thinking thinking version yet, featuring original member and guitarist Robert Fripp and new members John Wetton (vocals, bass guitar), David Cross (violin, Mellotron), Jamie Muir (percussion), and Bill Bruford (drums), as well as lyricist Richard Palmer-James. Bruford had just left his previous band, Yes before they embarked on their "Close To The Edge" tour. Bruford felt that he had done all he could with Yes at this point and thought the more jazz oriented King Crimson would be a more expansive outlet. The album sees the band incorporate into its sound violin and also various exotic percussion instruments, including sheet metal and mbiras, all courtesy of the newly arrived Muir.
The album opens with a long experimental instrumental piece titled "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part One." After that there are three vocal pieces, "Book of Saturday", "Exiles" and "Easy Money." These are followed by two more instrumentals, "The Talking Drum" and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Two." The instrumental pieces on this album have strong jazz fusion influences, and portions have an almost heavy metal feel.
The album spawned the concert staple "Exiles", whose Mellotron introduction had been adapted from an instrumental piece called "Mantra" the band's original line up performed throughout 1969. At that time, as well as in late 1972, the melody was played by Fripp on guitar.
It is the only studio album with this 5-man line up. Muir left the group while on tour promoting this album in 1973. Attrition took this incarnation of King Crimson through the next several albums until Fripp's "retirement" in 1975.
In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #22 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".^{(from Wikipedia)}

Invisible Opera Company Of Tibet (Brazil) biography
INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF TIBET is a code name created by Daevid Allen (Gong), which original idea is, as he says, 'an international ideological/spiritual/aesthetic communications network for artists of all kinds who share the common vision of warm hearted, pan-stylistic, inclusive art forms which serve the drive towards conscious evolution'. Subsequently different band versions originated whilst picking up this spirit with more than 50 members and ex-members around the globe.

The Brazilian branch, initially provided with the suffix 'Tropical Version Brazil', manifested around 1988/89 when guitarist Fabio Golfetti of the psych prog band Violeta De Outono contacted Allen with the intention to collaborate. They recorded the first single 'Numa Pessoa Só' in 1989 and two years later their debut 'The Eternal Voice' came out, musically a mix of ambient, glissando and ethno/world element. Glissando Spirit is the album we will hear this evening, released in 1993.

Bo Hansson - Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings
Bo HANSSON (born 10 April 1943 in Gothenburg, Sweden, died 24 April 2010) is famous for his 1972 concept album "Lord of the Rings" which came out decades before Hollywood ever made any noise about Tolkien's trilogy. The music was taped on a remote island off Stockholm, on an 8-track recorder, in a summer house studio with the help of a few friends and musicians. It received Gold Record awards in England and Australia. Licenced by Tony Stratton-Smith's Charisma label in England and America, it was also the subject of an extensive TV ad campaign that turned it into a hit in progressive rock circles at the time.

"Lord of the Rings" is a beautiful, timeless album of instrumental psychedelia worth hearing, even if it does sound rather 70ish production-wise. It doesn't feature any "fantasy/medieval" themes à la AYREON but captures the otherworldly, pastoral feel of Tolkien's work, like a Nordic album should.

Beggars Opera - Pathfinder
This band was from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728. The musicians of BEGGARS OPERA were Martin Griffiths (vocals), Rick Gardiner (guitar and vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Gordon Sellar (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals), Virginia Scott (Mellotron and vocals) and Raymond Wilson (drums and percussion). BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands.
On their third LP "Pathfinder" BEGGARS OPERA seems to have reached its pinnacle: strong and alternating compositions with lush keyboards (Mellotron, organ, piano and harpsichord), powerful electric guitarplay and many shifting moods (even Scottish folk with bagpipes).

The 40th Anniversary release of Caravan's classic Canterbury Sound album featuring remixes of some tracks by Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree).
Caravan are an English band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan.^[1] Caravan rose to success over a period of several years from 1968 onwards into the 1970s as part of the Canterbury scene, blending psychedelic rock and jazz to create a distinctive sound like their contemporaries Soft Machine. Caravan still remains active as a live band in the 21st century.

Elbow are an English rock band. They have played together since 1990 and recorded five studio albums, the most recent of which is Build a Rocket Boys!, released in March 2011. In the UK all of their albums have made the top twenty and seven of their singles have been in the top forty.
In 2008 they won the Mercury Music Prize for their album The Seldom Seen Kid.

The Canadian band was formed in 1998 by Rob Boak (guitar, bass, keyboards) and Denis Dufour (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals).^[1] The debut album, Late Night Tea, was released in 2000 on Mother Superior Records.^[1] Cam Lindsay of Exclaim! described the record as sounding like it had been recorded "at four in the morning", comparing it with Spiritualized and Tortoise.^[2] Second album ToSleepToDreamToWake was recorded over three years and issued in 2004 on Plan Eleven Records, charting across Canada.^[3] It was described by Darren Eke of Exclaim! as containing "varying degrees of jazz, psychedelia and electro-pop, which are often aided by atmospheric guitar or synthesiser textures to enhance its up-tempo electronic lustre",^[4] and by Wavelength as "a sublime mix of multiple instrumentals and lovely spacey ambience"

14 June 2011: AKIN & The Winter Tree (formerly Magus)

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – 6 June 2011 – "The way things end" is an hour plus, 15 track adventure, mixing progressive rock, metal, pop music and a bit of jazz. A string quartet from the Conservatoire National de Musique et de Danse de Lyon performs on it along with a classical flute, percussion and some other exotic instruments, such as the dilruba. The result is, as recently noted by an English reviewer, "a work of harmonious contrasts, (...) a jazzy liveliness but with a melancholy gothic underbelly; delicate subtlety and driving power; catchy and melodic but with technical musicianship; adventurous, fascinating and absorbing but oh so easy to listen to; acoustic and electronic instrumentation; simplicity and sophistication; light and dark."

THE WINTER TREE (formerly MAGUS) is a band formed by composer/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Laitres(a.k.a. Andrew Robinson) with vocalist/guitarist Mark Bond and his wife Deb Bond on keyboards. In late 2010 Andrew decided to rename the band THE WINTER TREE, after the song of the same title by one of Andrew's favorite bands, Renaissance. Andrew, along with new bandmates Deb and Mark Bond, released the self-titled CD "The Winter Tree" in mid 2011 with ProgRock Records.

The Winter Tree is a synthesis of many different musical styles and genres: rock, folk, electronic, ambient, and world music among others. These elements combine to create a fascinating and cohesive work that should satisfy the progrock enthusiast as well as a diverse listening public.

The Crimson Jazz Trio was a jazz trio led by drummer Ian Wallace, formerly of King Crimson, who re-interpreted King Crimson's music. The trio was conceived by Wallace, who recruited Tim Landers (bass) and Jody Nardone (piano) in 2004. They recorded the album The King Crimson Songbook, Volume One (Voiceprint) in 2005. The album includes material from beyond Wallace's tenure in King Crimson. It was supported with a few live dates in different parts of the US, but plans for further touring were scrapped due to Wallace's falling ill.
The band finished recording a second album, The King Crimson Songbook, Volume Two, with assistance from Jakko Jakszyk and Mel Collins (Wallace's colleagues in 21st Century Schizoid Band; Collins is also a King Crimson alumnus) before Wallace died on February 22, 2007. Much in the vein of Ozric Tentacles, and hailing from the same UK free festival scene, the Ship of Fools took us on an all-too-short but stunning voyage of discovery through two noteworthy albums in the early 90’s. Trippy psychedelic soundscapes, oscillating, swirly and swishing keyboard effects and trance inducing grooves predominate through these albums. While less possessed of the habit of jamming than their Ozric contemporaries, Ship of Fools had a talent for painting visual albums with their sound through the interplay of music with sound-clips, giving their work an amazingly cinematic quality that could usher the mind into realms rarely explored.

The band’s first fully-fledged album came out in 1993. Close Your Eyes (Forget the World), as the title would suggest, is a work with a hallucinatory quality. Entirely instrumental, save for the odd vocal sound clip, textured electronics interact with swirling phased guitars throughout this album, all the while underpinned by an intuitive drummer and more than adequate bassist. Deft use is made of repetitive grooves, explored in all their facets, infusing the listener’s cerebrum with a gorgeous textural ambience.

This is the kind of music that makes one go ever deeper into rarely explored territory, spacing the mind out into a kind of oneness with the music. The effect can be at times meditative and calming, as when Graham Wilkes’ flute dominates during the Celtic-tinged "Western Lands". At others it is invigorating, as when a long lasting repetitive groove is suddenly replaced by heavy riffing guitars and other sonic flourishes.

The band’s keyboard sound is heavily on the electronic side, with some elements that are close to techno. Yet all of this is counterbalanced by an organ sound that recalls the early 70’s, as well as a certain symphonic quality that gives the music a sense of grandeur and presence. Such counterbalance of instrumentation seems to have been very much a part of the band’s approach as it is difficult to find any part on a Ship of Fools disc that is dominated entirely by any one member of the band. For the most part, it is truly a group effort, with each member contributing a valuable part of the overall sonic palate; supporting the work of the others.

Out There Somewhere continues this approach, but now with a somewhat harder and more driving sound. Gone (with the exception of one track) is the flautist, as the band introduced a second guitarist to the mix. The general sound is more aggressive and heavily layered. The compositions are just that: compositions with limited jamming but plenty of flourishes into parts unknown that could only be explored by a band in which the musicians are totally in synch with a joint vision within the framework of a generally composed piece.

The musicianship is excellent, building upon the strengths of the first release. But the glue that seems to hold the whole thing together is in the extensive use of sound-clips that range from such diverse sources as the Apollo 11 mission, the Wizard of Oz, Ren & Stimpy’s Space Madness and even readings from Michel Foucault’s Madness & Civilization (from which the band appear to have taken their name). The whole thing melds the album into an exploration of one of Space Rock’s abiding fascinations: the discovery of one’s inner-self through exploring without. Hawkwind may have said it first with their "D-Rider" (“Facing out, we’re facing in”) but Ship of Fools here make the definitive space-rock commentary on the relationship of mankind to its universe. As such, this is kind of a concept album. The concept is far from linear, but a message therein is contained.

To pick out any one track from Out there Somewhere that stands above the rest is difficult. The album starts out hard and driving as if propelled by raging pistons, and yet by the third song the music takes on a pastoral quality. As each piece segues into the next, one has the impression of a carefully constructed and holistic piece of work; a rich tapestry of sound and audio-clips that weave an intricate pattern of images within the consciousness. The result is a richly psychedelic and intensely visual audio experience: one that engages the mind in a complete interaction with the music. I am quite sure that, if they had ever been introduced to each other, Nektar’s Mick Brockett would have had a field day with these guys.

With these classic albums, Ship of Fools presented an experience that went beyond that which is audible. It’s a sonic exploration of the consciousness…one that unfortunately is not available to most listeners. These titles (which were once available on a double CD) are no longer available. Hopefully enough of an outcry can emerge to make them once again available. It’s up to you, but I say that it’s time we keel-haul those responsible for the loss of one of space rock’s greats if these great titles do not once again readily grace many a CD deck.

12 April 2011: Frank Zappa & XAAL

Hot Rats is the second solo album by Frank Zappa. It was released in October 1969. Five of the six songs are instrumental (the song "Willie the Pimp" features a short vocal by Captain Beefheart). It was Zappa's first recording project after the dissolution of the original Mothers of Invention. In his original sleeve notes Zappa described the album as "a movie for your ears."
Because Hot Rats focuses on instrumental jazz-like compositions with extensive soloing, the music sounds very different from earlier Zappa albums, which featured satirical vocal performances with extensive use of musique concrète and editing. Multi-instrumentalist Ian Underwood is the only member of the Mothers to appear on the album and was the primary musical collaborator. Other featured musicians were Max Bennett and Shuggie Otis on bass, drummers Aynsley Dunbar and John Guerin and electric violinists Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Jean-Luc Ponty.
This was the first Frank Zappa album recorded on 16-track equipment and one of the first of such recordings released. Machines with 16 individual tracks allow for much more flexibility in multi-tracking and overdubbing than the professional 4- and 8-track reel-to-reel tape recorders that were standard in 1969. While Zappa was recording Hot Rats The Beatles were working on their Abbey Road album, but were limited to 8-track technology.

On the Way (En Chemin) forges ahead into the French "zeuhl" music. Based largely on pioneers such as Magma and Univers Zero, Xaal's music has the rhythmic proficiency of both the aforementioned bands, and even some horn guest spots from former Magma-ites. But rather than re-live old glories, Xaal takes the sound into new directions. Their melodies are based around a heavy, riffing guitar and occasional keyboard backdrops. Occasionally they remind me of Voivod! Led by busy drumming and an active bass, the music contains the weirdness, inconsistencies, and drive that early Magma had, without the repetition that turns many people off that band. The creative level here is something right out of the seventies and hopefully this will inspire other nineties prog bands to become more self-indulgent. Hailing from the wild west coast of Canada, Greylevel crafts a unique blend of progressive and emotional rock music.
From humble beginnings as a solo studio project, Greylevel has since evolved into a full-fledged band. Brought together by shared passion for creating original music that aims to transport the listener into worlds of sound.
The band spent two years carefully working on their sophomore release entitled "Hypostatic Union", their first album that features all 5 members. This album is now available through ProgRock Records.

Matt Stevens is a musician and composer from North London. An instrumental artist, he uses an acoustic guitar and a sampler to create multi layered tracks live. This is often called Live Looping. His music is compared with artists as diverse as Radiohead and Robert Fripp. He plays live all over the UK.

Tonight's show is a tribute to the late, great guitarist Gary Moore who passed away recently. We'll be playing Andrew Lloyd Webber's Variations (for rock band and cello), a live recording of Gary supporting Greg Lake in 1981, and few other tidbits.

Robert William Gary Moore (4 April 1952^[1] – 6 February 2011), better known simply as Gary Moore, was a musician from Belfast, Northern Ireland, best recognized as a blues rock guitarist and singer.
In a career dating back to the 1960s, Moore played with artists including Phil Lynott and Brian Downey during his teens, leading him to membership with the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy on three separate occasions. Moore shared the stage with such blues and rock luminaries as B.B. King, Albert King, Colosseum II, Greg Lake and Skid Row (not to be confused with the heavy metal band of the same name), as well as having a successful solo career. He guested on a number of albums recorded by high profile musicians, including a cameo appearance playing the lead guitar solo on "She's My Baby" from Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3.
Moore died of a suspected heart attack^[2] in his hotel room while on holiday in Estepona, Spain, in February 2011.^[3]^[4]

Variations is a Classical/Rock fusion album by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Andrew Lloyd Webber and younger brother Julian Lloyd Webber were always very close, but their two different careers (a rock musical composer and a classical cellist) meant that a collaboration seemed unlikely. It wasn't until Julian beat his brother in a bet on a Leyton Orient football match that Andrew was forced to write his cello work.
As his subject, Andrew chose the theme of Paganini's 24th caprice and added 23 variations for cello and rock band. The work premiered at the 1977 Sydmonton Festival with rock band Colosseum II, featuring Gary Moore, being joined by Barbara Thompson (Sax, Flute), Rod Argent, (Piano, Synthesizer, Keyboards) and Julian Lloyd Webber (Cello). It was subsequently rearranged and recorded in 1978. It reached number 2 in the album charts. (from Wikipedia)

Gazpacho are an Art rock band from Oslo, Norway.
The original core band of Jan-Henrik Ohme (vocals), Jon-Arne Vilbo (guitars) and Thomas Andersen (keyboards, programming, producer) started making music together in 1996 and the band has since expanded with Mikael Krømer (violin, co-producer), Lars Erik Asp (drums) and Kristian Torp (bass).
Gazpacho's music has been described by one critic as being "classical post ambient nocturnal atmospheric neo-progressive folk world rock".^[1] The music has been compared to A-ha, Radiohead, Marillion and Porcupine Tree.

Atropos is the Greek goddess of fate and destiny and she is one of the three goddesses of Fate. It is believed that she was the controller of the death of every mortal man on the earth. The Roman equivalent of Atropos was Morta and she had almost similar powers and functions as Atropos. She was the deciding factor of the death of a person and she chooses the way of death. She would cut the threads of life with her shears and end the life cycle. She is the oldest goddess among the three goddesses of fate and it was believed that all the other gods respected and feared her. Clotho and Lachesis were the other goddesses of fate and they were believed to be the daughters of the God Zeus. Atropos is often symbolized with shears in her hand, which is her tool to cut the threads of life. In popular culture, the Atropos is still worshipped in the Italian and Roman regions. The regions suffering from the low birth rates and high death rates are believed to be affected from the curse and wrath of Goddess Atropos. In the medical science, a fatal and life threatening drug is named as Atropos because of its immediate fatal effect on the human body.

Pulsar's second album, 'The Strands of the Future', is one of the definite and undisputable masterpieces of French prog, and together with their next recording 'Halloween', incarnates the band's peak in terms of inspired writing and skillful performing. Their style keeps on being somewhat inspired in 73-75 era Pink Floyd, but there are also obvious references to Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre's electronic excursions (powerful presence of multiple layers of synths and mellotrons), and also some compelling pastoral passages of flute and acoustic guitar in the 3-minute coda. Anglagard biography
Änglagård were a short-lived band who nonetheless generated critical acclaim and a loyal following in the early nineties with their brooding mellotron and synth heavy sound that also featured virtuoso percussionist Mattias Olsson and classically trained flautist Anna Holmgren.
Änglagård's sound is rich in mellotron, Hammond and piano, and a brooding wash of guitars and bass/bass pedal accented by Holmgren's moody and precise flute. The band's compositions are characterized by long, often instrumental tracks with significant tempo shifts and sometimes intense guitar flourishes. The Epilog album is instrumental in its entirety, and many of the tracks are distinguished by striking passages from Johnson's grand piano. Early Porcupine Tree also comes to mind, particularly when listening to Epilog.

Lunatic Soul biography
The LUNATIC SOUL is a solo studio project from RIVERSIDE's bass guitarist and vocalist Mariusz DUDA featuring RIVERSIDE's keyboard player Micha³ £APAJ on the Hammond organ with Maciej SZELENBAUM playing keyboards, piano, flutes, harmonica and qujang, Wawrzyniec DRAMOWICZ from INDUKTI on drums and QUIDAM's Maciej MELLER utilising the e-bow on an unspecified stringed instrument.

While far removed from RIVERSIDE's Progressive Metal it is not difficult to see comparisons and similarities to the parent band in the music contained on the eponymous debut album - not least of all because of DUDA's distinctive clean vocals, the occasional guttural growl and, despite the lack of electric guitars, the pounding acoustic guitar riffs that appear on some of the tracks. However, this is not the lighter, unplugged side of DUDA, it is a dark brooding mix of eclectic sounds with ethnic instruments and influences evoking eastern/oriental themes, psychedlic-era PINK FLOYD-like rhythms, swirling and ethereal keyboards reminiscent of early PORCUPINE TREE tied together by songs that are surprisingly accessible and melodic.

Pendulum's latest release: Immersion.
Pendulum are an Australian electronic rock/drum & bass band founded in 2002 in Perth by Rob Swire aka "Anscenic", Gareth McGrillen aka "Speed", and Paul Harding aka "El Hornet".^[1] Harding is a veteran DJ while Swire and McGrillen were part of an acclaimed rock band known as Xygen, but after hearing Konflict's "Messiah" at a rave they were inspired into the drum and bass genre. In 2003 they relocated to the United Kingdom. While Hold Your Colour held true to this intent, they have since experimented with mixing rock influences back in, with the rock-heavy second album In Silico, and the third album, Immersion, being a mixture of both, together with more electronic influences. Their newer efforts incorporate styles from genres such as dubstep, heavy metal and electro house. Pendulum are now better known for their energetic live shows, with live band setup and advanced visual displays and incorporating their rock background with drum and bass. (from Wikipedia)

PENDRAGON were formed in Stroud, England in 1978. Originally known as ZEUS PENDRAGON it was decided fairly early on to drop the "ZEUS" as co-founder Julian Baker felt it was too wordy to fit on a t-shirt! There were several line up changes in the early days, members included Julian Baker (co-founder/guitar) Nigel Harris (drums) Stan Cox (bass) Robert Dalby (bass) John Barney Barnfield (keys) Rik Carter (keys). The one constant key element was Nick Barrett. The line up then remained the same for almost 20 years, featuring : Nick Barrett (guitar/lead vocal) Clive Nolan (keys) Peter Gee (bass) and Fudge Smith (drums), until 2006 when PENDRAGON and Fudge Smith parted ways.

Todate there have been 21 releases from PENDRAGON who set up their own label "TOFF RECORDS" in the late 1980's following the release of "The Jewel" and "KowTow" (as well as a couple of mini albums). "The Masquerade Overture" is probably their most acclaimed work todate. Although a recent change of direction with "Believe" has seen opinions somewhat split, it is definitely a remarkable album and maybe showing a move away from classic Neo-Prog.

It is a live rendition of The Wall, produced and engineered by James Guthrie, with tracks selected from the August 1980 and June 1981 performances at Earls Court in London. The general release followed on 18 April 2000, with US and Canadian distribution by Columbia Records.

Trans is the 14th studio album by Neil Young, released in 1982. Recorded partially and released during his notorious Geffen era in the 1980s, Trans baffled many Neil Young fans. Some suggested that the album could be a satirical message that Young was trying to send about the direction music was headed in the future. A vocoder features prominently in five of the nine tracks. While the album was poorly received, some critics point out that the melodies are strong and that the album involves Young addressing new musical movements, as he did previously on Rust Never Sleeps and later with the grunge movement. With the Collage album "Safe", you know what you are going to get. Nothing too adventurous or different, but good, solid, highly melodic prog, with no obvious weaknesses. This prematurely extinct Neo Prog band from Poland was not only the most important band from this country in the 90's; it figured among the best Neo Prog bands in the world. Blending heavy keyboard background with extremelly melodical guitar and vocals, they were able to deliver an original and very interseting music. Intricate tempo changes differentiate this band from the competition amongst their style, with vocals in Polish and English depending on the album. (from ProgArchives)

Founded by former Elohim members, brothers Jean-Paul Trutet and Daniel Trutet, along with Delphine Douillard, and keyboard maestro Thierry Brandet. This would prove to be mainly a Brandet venture, as the Trutets did not stay for the second album. Brandet is also the primary composer.

The name is taken from a mysterious community of ancient Jews, called the esséniens, who lived in the desert of Judea. Almost nothing was known about them until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. They were dislodged by the Romans, at the time of the Jewish revolution.

As you may have guessed, Keyboards reign supreme with this group. There are the usual comparisons to Genesis, Yes, and even Marillion. The most obvious influence is Rick Wakeman, but there is more. Douillard's Harp is quite unique in the realm of rock music. Classical composers, and France itself, are in the mix, thus giving a unique flavor to Hecenia. (from ProgArchives.com)

Collegium Musicum is an art-rock band from Czechoslovakia and was established by stable member Marián Varga 1969. Prevalent in the band´s repertory are instrumental compositions, comprising re-interpretations of classical music themes (Haydn, Bartók, Stravinskij …), and original compositions bearing the first signs of artistic post-modernism (Euphony from the album Convergencie). The story of this band was published in book by musician and music reviewer Marián Jaslovský. Star formation of Collegium Musicum were Marián Varga (hammond organ, keyboards, piano), bassguitarist Fedor Frešo and drummer Dušan Hájek. Collegium Musicum played in various formations, also with guitarists Rasťo Vacho (from Blues Five), Pavel Vaňě (from Synkopy 61 and Progress Organization), František Griglák (later Fermáta) and others. In early days Collegium Musicum played with guitarist Fedor Letňan. Latňan was fired and replaced by Rasťo Wacho from Blues Five. Rasto Vacho left the band first time when he gone studied. Collegium Musicum requested Pavel Vaňě and they record first debut EP. After return of Rasťo Vacho they record debut LP “Collegium Musicum”. (from Last.FM)

Jean-Pierre Alarcen's classic Tableaux Number 1 from 1979 will be featured on today's spotlight.In 1979, he released his second album, "Tableau No. 1". This work in three movements has more ambient (somewhat The ENIDish) and symphy qualities, but also has jazz and Zeuhlish elements. It's more in the romantic "classical" (to mix my eras in a poor turn of phrase) with melodic rock styled camp than before, but with dramatic contrast. Soft ambient music turns into jazzy guitar driven rock. Allan Holdsworth springs to mind as a possible influence on his guitar work here, as well as McLaughlin. Alarcen was the guitarist in the one-shot french group Sandrose. After Sandrose he had two albums: JPA and Tableau. Tableau which is very symphonic, is basically one long piece spanning both sides of the album, vaguely comparable to stuff like The Enid, but a little more low key for the most part. Jean Pierre Alarcen is a more guitar oriented album with some fusion leanings, but not overtly so, which features excellent guitarwork and some brilliant writing. Both are available together on one CD.

The album features soaring guitars, fat organs and bone-breaking drums, as well as a healthy dose of retro. But most of all, it never loses its focus on unique and melody-driven song-writing. And it comes in the form of an ambitious story, told through the eyes of the vocalists and musicians. This double album features the talents of Damian Wilson (Threshold, Ayreon, Les Misérables), Karl Groom (Threshold, Shadowland), Davy Mickers (Stream of Passion, Ayreon), Alejandro Millán (Hello Madness, Stream of Passion) and many others.

It's more in the romantic "classical" (to mix my eras in a poor turn of phrase) with melodic rock styled camp than before, but with dramatic contrast. Soft ambient music turns into jazzy guitar driven rock. Allan Holdsworth springs to mind as a possible influence on his guitar work here, as well as McLaughlin. The third movement in particular has exciting funky bass guitar-driven work. It ends with music that rather reminds me of Toto's "Dune" soundtrack. (from ProgArchives)

Review of Porcupine Tree Concert at Radio City Music Hall NYC 24 Sept

(I've just got back in from the weekend in NY.

As for the concert - WOW!!! For fans of the older material who never got the chance to see the band in those days (like me) it was a dream come true - one can always quibble a bit when picking personal favorites, but this was as good a selection as I could have wished for - unless of course they had played an hour or two longer ;). My friend is much more of a recent material fan, so he was somewhat disappointed that there were no "In Absentia" songs, but as for me, I did see the pre-FOABP tour, when they played several of the best songs from IA, and I would not have dropped a single one of the older songs for any of the newer ones they didn't play.

They came out, as your setlist (which is correct) shows, with an acoustic setup. Not entirely acoustic - Wes did play electric guitar for the lead lines, and Richard used one of his synthesizers so he did fill in more than just piano-type sounds. But Steve just played the acoustic and Colin played the upright double-bass, which was really cool. SW started by saying, "A couple of us were sitting in the bar last night trying to figure out what we were going to play, and had no idea. But we're going to play a lot of old shit." Starting with SBTM was a surprise of course (and by the way it wasn't the live debut - they played it a handful of times back on the "Stupid Dream" tours, but only a few times), but when they followed it with "Small Fish" I knew it was going to be a really special night. I love that song, and always wondered why they never played it live, but now they did, and it sounded great (SW had played it in solo acoustic shows a couple of times, but never PT). PN sounded great also (actually I may as well stop saying that - everything sounded great), and Wes singing the upper harmonies that Chris Maitland used to sing live sounded at least as good as when it was Steve and Chris - really excellent. Then BD - I may be the only person who thinks that it is the best song from the second disk of "The Incident", but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it :). Then Steve said, "When we were putting this set together we were wondering what would be the absolutely least appropriate song to play in this format [lots of laughs from the audience], and chose this one," and they started "Futile". I'm amazed Steve didn't break every string on his acoustic the way he pounded out the chord riffs. Then he said, "Ok, I hope you enjoy the headlining act. They'll be out in a few minutes with some more electricity."

About 10 minutes later (there was no countdown clock this intermission, though there was for the next one) they came out with "Even Less". I had seen they had been playing it on a few of the recent shows, so it wasn't unexpected, but it was certainly great that they did play it, especially for me as it was the song that sold me on the band! The first time I heard PT was a boot of the "Lightbulb Sun" tour. "Russia on Ice" caught my attention, but it was EL that sealed the deal. While OC and "Lazurus" were also not surprising (and Steve had the audience sing the next-to-last chorus of "Lazarus"), of course, but TB certainly was. And then "Sky" - incidentally, you may have heard how on the "Nil Recurring" tour they played it a few times, but they started it with the vocals. This had the full opening instrumental, like back in the day. After that they could have played anything and I would have considered myself completely satisfied. But of course it kept going. Incidentally, for most of the old material (like TB and Sky and others) Wes left the stage so it was just the 4 of them. At one point Steve said, "You may have noticed Wes leaving the stage for the old stuff. We did this because we wanted to play it like we did in the old days, as a 4-piece, not because he's incontinent." That of course got a round of laughs and applause. After "Bonnie" they took a break with the 10-minute countdown clock, and of course we all did as we were supposed to and counted down the last ten seconds. :)

So then it was "Occam's Razor" to start the opening medley of "Incident" songs. The visuals for this entire section were great, but I really loved the film accompanying "Blind House" - perfect for the lyrics and subject. Hopefully they will post it at some time on their set so you can see it. Then they once again surprised and greatly pleased me with DD - I thought they were through with the old material, but obviously they weren't. TF of course is obviously a musical homage to Floyd, essentially a variation on Dogs (with the descending chord riff of Sheep). Well, I saw Floyd several times back in the day, and it sounded like the best Floyd ever sounded live! The middle section was mind-blowing. Incidentally, it seemed that they just kept increasing the raw power of the sound as the set went along. Anesthetize pt 2 shook my insides wonderfully, and probably got the loudest single applause of any song. One last total shock with UTD, which also had some great psychedelic light effects (though the visuals were excellent for the entire show), and then ST - for this they pushed the power to max - my hair actually stood up from the back of my head! A standing ovation and a minute later they came back on. Steve said, "We only have time for one more song [obviously their time slot ended at 11:00], but it's a fucking long one." So then "Arriving", which is my favorite from "Deadwing", so it was a perfect ending.

The house was full, the audience was great - and I was a bit surprised that obviously most of them knew the old material. Even the best bands sometimes have performances that are professional, but not really inspired (and PT is no different, listening to the various boots), but this show they really sounded inspired and into it. All in all, it ranks in the top echelon of the uncounted shows I've seen - definitely in the top ten, possibly in the top five. I was completely and thoroughly satisfied. Sorry you couldn't get here to see it. I'm just immensely happy they put on this show and I was able to get good tickets (1'st mezzanine, 4'th row, dead center) and the timing and everything worked out.

So that's my review. As another song says,

"Having been some days in preparation
A splendid time is guaranteed for all."

And this night it was PT that was topping the bill (actually the only show on the bill, but you get the point).

Il Trono Dei Ricordi (the Throne of Memories) are an Italian progressive rock band of the 1990s, who released an album of songs setting the words of William Blake. They were influenced by Genesis, Marillion and ELP.^[1] The album sets extensive passages from Blake's prophetic books, including Visions of the Daughters of Albion and the Book of Urizen. It also sets The Little Black Boy from Songs of Innocence and Experience.

Our classic progressive album this week is Camel's brilliant Harbour of Tears. Harbour of Tears is a Studio Concept Album by English progressive rock band Camel. It tells the story of an Irish family who is painfully separated as their young ones depart to the United States to seek a better future. and vocalist and guitarist Andrew Latimer learned that the last sight of Ireland his grandmother's family would have seen was Cóbh Harbour, a deep water port that witnessed the fracturing of hundreds upon thousands of families as their sons and daughters departed towards America. Thus the album was titled as the common alias of the port, 'Harbour of Tears'.

Dec Burke is a UK based vocalist/guitarist who has performed recorded, written with Darwin’s Radio, and Frost*, toured and supported Spock’s Beard and Dream Theater.
Destroy All Monsters is his first solo effort following his departure from Darwin’s Radio.
Written recorded and produced by Dec at his own studio, the album is high energy, but, has some very melodic softer tones. The album contains performances by Nathan King (Frost* / Level 42) and Carl Westholm (Carptree / Jupiter Society).

German multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and control freak “t” is back with his 3^rd album. After fronting german progrock masterminds “scythe” and 2 highly acclaimed solo albums, he took four years to write, perform, mix, produce and co-master “anti-matter poetry”, a 68 minute concept album. t, again, played all the instruments and sang all parts here.
t has always been a musician. his parents had him classically educated as a piano player as well as a singer from early childhood on, but as the girls seemed to fancy guitar players more, his main interest shifted there at a stage in his not-quite-so-early-childhood. Today he admits to the fact of being a strictly average musician with many instruments. From early band efforts on, t has also always been interested in sound issues and thus kept on learning how to arrange, record, mix, and produce. Although all of his solo albums feature him as the sole instrumentalist and singer, “Anti-Matter Poetry” is his first effort to also do all the sound work by himself. Only the final mastering was transferred to frequency wizard Jürgen Lusky - with t assisting, of course.
In his daytime job, t teaches teaching to teachers and teaches himself. However, he still does not suffer from any mental disfunction grave enough to be diagnosed, apart from having a phd in classics. He is married to the renowned artist and writer Katia Tangian and father of a daughter.

This week's classic album is Yes Close to the Edge. The band's fifth album it was released in September, 1972.

Karnataka is an excellent neo-progressive band featuring female vocals and showing influences of Yes, Mostly Autumn, and Clannad among others.
The Gathering Light is their most recent release and this week's contemporary progressive feature.
Sadly, even though they've just released this new album, Karnataka is set to begin a new chapter following the announcement that Lisa, Ian Harris and Gonzalo will be leaving the band.

Our classic prog album this week is Thick as a Brick, a concept album, and the fifth studio album, by English progressive rock band Jethro Tull released in 1972. Its lyrics are built around a poem written by a fictitious boy, "Gerald Bostock" a.k.a. "Little Milton" (Ian Anderson himself). The album featured only one song, lasting nearly 45 minutes. To accommodate the album on LP vinyl and cassette, the seamless track was split on both sides of the record. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart.

After watching the documentary on PBS the other night, When You're Strange, I decided this week would be a good time to revisit The Doors classic, self-titled first album. The Doors' self-titled debut LP was released in the first week of January 1967. It featured most of the major songs from their set, including the nearly 12-minute musical drama "The End". The band recorded their first album at Sunset Sound Recording Studios from August 24 to 31, 1966, almost entirely live in the studio.

Overview
Originally formed in 2004 as a group of session musicians backing up a pop
vocalist, the band realized that prog was where they wanted to be and
ventured out as an instrumental group similar to Planet X. After some time
in this configuration they decided that having a vocalist was what they
needed and found Tiago and started working on their first album.
The debut album of the Portuguese band brings to the 21st century the
same non-conformism and artistic expression without boundaries that was
so fresh in the past, through musicians like Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Thom
Yorke and Steven Wilson. Varying from the most aggressive up-tempo

DOGMA was an excellent progressive band from Brazil. The music performed on these two great albums is at the same time symphonic and melodious. Their compositions are very melodic relying on symphonic keyboard arrangements and some superb guitar interventions from Fernando CAMPOS. The guitarist has some Steve ROTHERY, Mike OLDFIELD echoes or Steve HACKETT style. The group's music is mainly influenced by GENESIS and CAMEL.

DOGMA'S debut album, Album, is definitely British in style with its long instrumental tracks of excellent melodic music in the neo-progressive vein.

Twin Sunrise is considered their best work of progressive rock. It is more symphonic, powerful and melodic than the first, adds vocals, but it is mostly instrumental. A recommended album for lovers of Steve HACKETT, CAMEL and SAGRADO CORAÇAO DA TERRA... A fine piece of progressive rock.
