PROG REVIEWER

4 stars First album by this rather late Krautrock band was undoubtedly their very best one. Actually the only point of criticism one could quote is the fact that it might have sounded already a bit dated in its year of release. Being much in the vein of early Tull, Iron Butterfly, Cream or The Doors the tracks presented here are a wonderful demonstration of this early Art Rock or Proto-Prog style. The title song is the one reminding the most to Tull with a soaring flute and heavy organ. It's a very powerful and grooving one with a sort of psychedelic blues guitar play that's bringing Cream back to mind. "Seasons Of Life" is even in a stronger psychedelic vein, kinda The Doors meet Cream or Iron Butterfly, very groovin' stuff as well. This record doesn't let your foot stand still only for one second. Though it might be not considered as that much progressive for the year of 1974 "Desert Places" was nevertheless a brilliant album in organ driven Art Rock typical for beginning seventies.

Probably not essential for any prog collector in general, but highly recommended for fans of jammin' and groovin' early 70s psychedelic blues rock!

"Unclear Frequencies", the new Yousef Kawar album released by Reverse Alignment, unveils a mesmerizing and introspective side of Kawar's musical repertoire. With a profound sense of meditation and a touch of enigmatic allure, this collection of eight tracks captivates listener, guiding the attention towards the intricate depths of psyche. Each composition serves as a portal, drawing us into a mesmerizing sonic landscape where hidden mysteries beckon and unanswered questions linger. In this ethereal sonic tapestry without a center of attraction, Yousef Kawar expertly manipulates the elements of sound, creating an atmosphere that is both haunting and enchanting. The music lingers in the air, delicately weaving its way into our thoughts, evoking a sense of pulverized introspection. It invites us to embrace the enigma and the unknown, to delve into those small psychic dark areas we often overlook.

Yousef Kawar is an internationally renowned artist, known for his multifaceted talents as a Musician, Videographer, and Audiovisual Artist. With a string of accolades under his belt, including numerous videography and soundtrack awards, Yousef has solidified his position as a visionary in the industry. Throughout his career, Yousef has released seven music albums, each meticulously composed, produced, and mixed by his own hand. His exceptional talent has caught the attention of esteemed international music producers and artists, leading to his inclusion in record label releases. Working from his studio, Yousef actively engages in creating captivating audiovisual installations and collaborating on music and art projects in New York City (where he currently lives), the United States, Europe, and across the globe. Yousef's artistic endeavors have garnered recognition and acclaim from professionals in various fields. Notably, CNN's Johnny Colt, the international Italian/English book "Vite In Quarantena," featuring iconic figures such as Sadhguru, Orlan, and Stelarc, as well as Hyperallergic magazine, AirVuz, and Viewing NYC video channels, have all acknowledged his exceptional work. Moreover, Yousef has had the privilege of working and collaborating with renowned stars such as Alex Skolnick, Steve Lukather, Mateus Asato, Steve Vai, and many others, further attesting to his artistic prowess.

Closure/Continuation is the eleventh studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. The album is their first since 2009's The Incident. Despite public uncertainty of the band's future after frontman Steven Wilson's focus on a solo career in 2010, the album was recorded intermittently in complete secrecy among Wilson, Gavin Harrison, and Richard Barbieri across the course of the following decade, without long-time bassist Colin Edwin. With the COVID-19 pandemic putting members' separate plans on hold, the band found time to completely finish the album in September 2021. Towards the end of the year, the band's reformation was publicly announced, alongside the album's release date of 24 June 2022. Four singles were released ahead of the album—"Harridan", "Of the New Day", "Herd Culling", and "Rats Return".

Prior to release, Loudwire named the album one of their most anticipated rock and metal albums in 2022.[45] Upon release, the album was generally well-received, receiving an average rating of 71 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on eight reviews.[36] Metal Injection praised the album for being "an outstanding and endearing comeback...while it doesn't bring anything new to the table...what it does accomplish and induce is quite exemplary".[40] AllMusic concluded that the album was "A welcome new entry in PT's catalog" that shows that "the band have plenty left to say".[37] Record Collector noted that while the album "perhaps misses the conceptual cogency of earlier Tree peaks", ultimately it "weds a reinvigorated affirmation of band identity to expansive energies, all to confident effect".[28]

In April 2009, J. G. Ballard died at the age of 78. By the end of his life he was recognised as one of the greatest British writers of the latter half of the twentieth century. The acclaim his work has garnered stems from its unsettling ability to describe the present in collision with near but unexpected futures. His narratives operate according to the temporalities of car crashes, epidemics, and physiological shocks. The word ‘Ballardian’ has entered the Collins Dictionary as a term denoting ‘dystopian modernity’.

The fiction of J. G. Ballard delves deep into the human psyche, not only by exploring the relationships between its characters, but also by conveying the cityscape in terms of the mind. Either real or imaginary, the urban spaces reflect and are reflected by the minds of the protagonists. Influenced by the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, the Jungian model of the psyche, the experiments in anti-psychiatry initiated by R.D. Laing, as well as the technological advancements of the new millennium, Ballard proposes a new type of fiction. The aim of his pursuit is to answer some of the pressing issues that the self is confronted with in an urban milieu which is gradually becoming more dehumanized and impersonal.

“The advanced societies of the future will not be governed by reason. They will be driven by irrationality, by competing systems of psychopathology.”

J.G. Ballard

With this present compilation, curated by Raffaele Pezzella (Sonologyst), ZeroK label (in collaboration with, Lars Bröndum, Eraldo Bernocchi, Gavin Morrow , Joel Gilardini, Esa J. Ruoho, Heikki Lindgren, Mario Lino Stancati, Erik Jarl, Roberto Quezada, Jarko M. Hedenius, Janne Liimatainen, Mombi Yuleman and Christian Schneider) provides sound descriptions of the dystopian world narrated by the English master J. G. Ballard in his novels and short stories, creating an imaginary soundtrack of those s/f masterpieces.

Richard Dodgin (This Is Darkness)
The Dystopian World of J.G.Ballard is another great compilation album from the Zero K label, featuring music from an impressive range of musicians (including HLER, JARL, and Lars Bröndum to name just a few). The album “… provides sound descriptions of the dystopian world … in his novels and short stories, creating an imaginary soundtrack of those s/f masterpieces …” with tracks of experimental, post industrial, drone, dark ambient, and electronica all fitting together nicely to create a remarkable listening experience. The album does have a cohesive feel to it, and yet the moods of the tracks vary: some are dark and confrontational, others are meditative and lo-fi, others yet are noisy, a number are minimalist, and others are challenging and disturbing. Fantastic.

The bulk of tonight's show will be devoted to the compilation set released by Eighth Tower Records in Italy, Drone Islands - Land Raising.

Pitchfork Media and Allmusic journalist Mark Richardson defined drone music thus: "The vanishing-point music created by drone elders Phill Niblock and, especially, LaMonte Young is what happens when a fixation on held tones reaches a tipping point. Timbre is reduced to either a single clear instrument or a sine wave, silence disappears completely, and the base-level interaction between small clusters of "pure" tone becomes the music's content. This kind of work takes what typically helps us to distinguish "music" from "sound," discards nearly all of it, and then starts over again from scratch."

Since LaMonte Young early experiments till today, drone music has come a long way. Eighth Tower Records is proud to present an anthology featuring 12 projects from artists who work on classic and new stimulating paths for the drone music.

09 April 2013: Carmen and Long Distance Calling

Carmen was a British-American band active from 1970-1975. Their style was a fusion of rock music and flamenco music and dance.
Carmen's stage performances typically featured Amaral and Angela Allen dancing on a specially amplified stage floor, so that their flamenco zapateado became an integral part of the music. Additional Spanish influences in their sound included acoustic guitar interludes in flamenco style, occasional Spanish lyrics, themes of betrayed love reminiscent of Federico Garcia Lorca, and castanets, all supported by a traditional rock rhythm section.

Long Distance Calling is a German Post Rock band formed in 2006 in Münster. Their melancholic tracks, usually lasting five or more minutes, are mostly instrumental, but some of them feature guest vocalists: Peter Dolving from The Haunted (Built Without Hands, album Satelite Bay) John Bush from Armored Saint Ex- Anthrax (Middeville, album 'Long Distance Calling) and Jonas Renkse from Katatonia (The Nearing Grave, album Avoid The Light). Long Distance Calling have released two singles and three full-length albums, all of which were received very positively by critics: Satellite Bay (2007),[1][2][3] Avoid the Light (2009)[4][5][6] and Long Distance Calling (2011).[7][8][9] In 2008 the band played at the Rock am Ring[10] and Roadburn festivals; the band toured Germany in 2009.[11] In 2010 Long Distance Calling and Finnish Swallow The Sun supported Katatonia during the New Night Over Europe tour.[12] They most recently supported Protest The Hero on their 2012 European tour.
