The first Tuesday of every month we spotlight a classic progressive rock album from the 1960s or 70s. This week we feature Jimi Hendrix's classic album, Electric Ladyland, in its entirety. I bought this album when it was first released and I am still impressed with the variety of styles of music and Hendrix's virtuosity on this album.

From Wikipedia:

Electric Ladyland is the third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in October 1968. A double album, it was the only record from the Experience with production solely credited to Hendrix.[nb 1] The band's most commercially successful release and its only number one album, it was released by Reprise Records in the United States on October 16, 1968, and by Track Records in the UK nine days later. By mid-November, it had reached number 1 on the Billboard Top LPs chart, spending two weeks there. In the UK it peaked at number 6, where it spent 12 weeks on the British charts.

Electric Ladyland includes a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower", which became the Experience's best-selling single, reaching number six in the UK and number 20 in the United States. Although the album confounded critics upon its release, it has since been viewed as one of Hendrix's best works and one of the greatest albums of all time, being featured on various "greatest albums" lists, including Q's 2003 list of the 100 greatest albums and various editions of Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", on which it was ranked 53rd in the 2020 iteration.

Mirage - Brendon Moeller

Quiet Details 24

Under a range of monikers, Brendon has been at the forefront of exploring some of the deepest planes of electronic music for nearly two decades. Dub, house, techno, experimental, drum and bass and more - releases on labels such as Echochord, Electric Deluxe, Soul People Music, Silent Season, Delsin, Deep Space Media, Mule Music and many others, show how well-regarded and widely-loved his music is.

Mirage sees Brendon take this wealth of experience to create the most incredible journey of hypnotic atmospherics - we get the feeling of a composer completely at ease with themselves and their vision of electronic music.

Grounded by the heaviest of bass-weight, each track presents a vast and seemingly endless sonic universe - gorgeous trails of musical fragments drift in every direction, floating away on crumbling echos and near-infinite reverberant decay.

Highly textured sonic particles come in and out of view - shifting drones, acidic undulations, synthetic waves, field recordings and broken percussion - all within a framework that harks back to the original dub masters, yet completely of today and this moment in time.

Deft and precise studio techniques mix with an intuitive and truly hands on approach to music creation - Brendon has a unique and innate understanding of both the exact sounds needed and the exact moment to let them live - conducting this dubwise ensemble with the maximum finesse to evoke the most powerful emotions and feelings at will.

As he says himself:
The soundscapes you’re listening to were recorded over a few days in the middle of a Summer heatwave in Patterson, New York, July 2024.

Endless hum… nature grinding slow, steady decay.
Unmeasured rhythms syncopate… heat’s dissonance, fractured airwaves.
Time drips, pools, melts—liquefied, slipping into cracks of unreality.
Like vapor, slipping between what is and isn’t. The mirage hums.
Frequencies hit—familiar but formless, just the pulse.
Always the pulse.

So pleased to share it with you, a wonderful album of breathtaking beauty.
Huge thanks to Brendon for everything, a wonderful addition to the series.

The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - originating from a photo from Brendon which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.
As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom 6-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.
The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, representing the music in its purest form.

Quatermass is the only studio album by English progressive rock band Quatermass, released in May 1970 by Harvest Records. It was produced by the Swedish producer Anders "Henkan" Henriksson [sv].[2]

Critical reception

Despite the album not performing well on the charts at the time of the release, it started to attract considerable attention in 1975, when guitarist Ritchie Blackmore covered the second track, "Black Sheep of the Family", for the debut album from Rainbow. As a consequence of the revived interest, Quatermass was re-released and sold further 20,000 copies. Since then, it has gained a cult status [3] and has received favorable retrospective reviews. Mike DeGagne has given the album a rating of four stars out of five on AllMusic. He has called Quatermass "a must-have for prog rock enthusiasts, especially lovers of the keyboard-dominated style which flourished in the early '70s".[1]

From the kitchen of the original King Crimson R&D fraKctal units & Stick Men. Defying logistics to grab four days together, the immersive session included repertoire rehearsal; as well as recording semi-prepared pieces and several full improvisations. The band's chemistry has deep roots and connections are made quickly so large slabs of music appear unedited.  Purchase this release on Bandcamp.

These two hours of recordings are the outcome.
Well...only part of it.

Pat Mastelotto - Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, and so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 25 years with King Crimson and Stick Men.

Markus Reuter is a composer, guitarist, and producer. He began his musical journey as a composer before delving into Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft, mastering the Chapman Stick, and eventually transitioning to the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released numerous solo albums and has collaborated extensively with various musicians. He holds a prominent position in the experimental band Anchor and Burden and forms the duo Tuner with Pat. Additionally, he was a member of Europa String Choir and has worked alongside notable artists such as Gary Husband, Robert Rich, J. Peter Schwalm, Mark Wingfield, and many others. Reuter's versatility is evident through his involvement in Devin Townsend's touring band. Notably, he also performs in power trios including Stick Men with Pat and Tony Levin, TRUCE with Asaf Sirkis and Fabio Trentini, and Markus Reuter/Tim Motzer/Kenny Grohowski.

Trey Gunn, the extraordinary Warr guitarist and musician, has left an indelible mark on the world of progressive and experimental music. Renowned for his virtuosic talent, he has graced the stages and studios with legendary acts such as King Crimson, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Happy Rhodes, Puscifer, Tool and John Paul Jones, contributing his unique blend of mesmerizing and innovative playing. As the founder of the esteemed 7D Media record label, Gunn continues to be a guiding force in curating exceptional musical experiences. Trey Gunn’s visionary artistry and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of sound make him a true luminary in the realm of progressive music.

Agitation Free is a German experimental krautrock band, formed in 1967 by Michael "Fame" Günther (bass guitar), Lutz "Lüül" Ulbrich (guitar), Lutz Ludwig Kramer (guitar) and Christopher Franke (drums).  (Agitation Free website)

Agitation Free's music is psychedelic, experimental krautrock with elements of spaced-out ambient, experimental electronic and drone. The music for the most part consists of driving organ-patterned drone-like rock; seamless psychedelic cosmic musical textures with intricate musicianship and musical variety; hard, driving rock similar to Amon Düül II; and jamming that occasionally invokes the interplay and styles of Garcia, Weir and Lesh of The Grateful Dead and hints at a blues rock base not unlike The Allman Brothers Band. Many of their songs have a trance-inducing, psychedelic feel with sections of driving rock fueled by fiery and melodic moving guitar lines and solid, propelling and intricate drumming and a prominent bass line. All of Agitation Free's songs are instrumental apart from some recitation on "Haunted Island".

Their first album Malesch is cosmic, aggressive, psychedelic, creative, ethnically flavored (mainly by short interludes of recordings from Egypt), mysterious and densely packed with ideas whereas their second, titled 2nd is more laid-back and upbeat, with longer structure, much more of an emphasis on traditional styled jamming à la the Grateful Dead and a warmer and more straightforward sound. On Malesch the songs blend together to make a seamlessly flowing, tangential and uninterrupted musical journey, whereas on 2nd songs are more predictably structured, more varied in their sound and stand more as independent works.

Their sound is similar to, but fairly distinguishable from, other contemporary Krautrock bands such as Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Guru Guru, Brainticket, Yatha Sidhra and Kalacakra, as well as the mixed-influence blues-based jam rock of The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers noticeable on 2nd, and slightly later and more symphonic bands like Asia Minor and Anyone's Daughter

PROG REVIEWER

4 stars The 2004 re-issue of this 2002 album "A Gaze Between The Past And The Future" contains the bonus track "Hold Me Now".

Since I'm really into progressive Rock music for a few years now and I have a Brazilian wife I though I should explore more Brazilian Prog-Rock bands and till now I'm not disappointed at all! Even though Progressive Rock is probably one of Brazil smallest musical genres, all instrumentation is great! Those guys really know how to play prog- rock like they invented it. Let me review this album track by track.

1. Exit from Calcutta (10:43)

Great instrumental opening containing many instruments like guitars, bass guitar, drums, mandolin and flutes! The flutes remind me of the Dutch band FOCUS a bit. Vocals are all sung in English and voice is easy to listen to. This is probably one of the best (and one of the longest) tracks of the album. 5 stars.

2. You Want The Real Me (6:32)

Again all instruments are represented on this track along with the flutes. After the first two verses there's a great drum section followed by the chorus and flutes. 4 stars.

3. Fragments from Dies Irae (5:30)

Soft piano intro followed by great electrical lead guitars accompanied by bass and drum. The guitar is played like it is "singing" the chorus already. Vocals are a bit more "rough" than on the previous tracks. Is this also Valdir Zamboni singing or is it one of his fellow band members who's normally one of the backing vocalists? If it is Valdir he really knows how to change his voice! Instrumentation on this track is all superb again! 5 star track.

4. Blue Light (5:42)

Soft acoustic guitar intro followed by flutes. Not a very long track, but probably track with the most lyrics of this album. Vocals are sung again "normal". This is a very soft track, almost a ballad. I must say I enjoy their somewhat heavier and complex tracks more. Nevertheless a nice track to take a breath. 3 stars.

5. The Raft of Medusa (12:36)

According to Greek Mythology Medusa used to be a beautiful girl, who lived in a country where the sun wasn't shining. She begged Athena to let her sail to a sunny continent. But when Athena refused, Medusa said this was only because the she would not be the most beautiful woman anymore when people would see her! Great instrumentation on this track capturing the dramatic mood of the story. 5 stars.

6. Hold Me Now* (6:32)

Starting out as a softer track in the same style of "Blue Light". Acoustic guitars, flutes accompanied by soft vocals. Later on the song gets more up-tempo ending and slipping away softly. 4 stars.

All instruments are played really well by TARKUS especially the flutes. The flutes are really nice on the entire album and almost a "Tarkus trademark" like they used to be a trademark of FOCUS. All and all a very nice album indeed.

My rating: 5 + 4 + 5 + 3 + 5 + 4 = 26/6 = 4,3 stars.

Gnosis is the fourth album by the British progressive rock band, Gnidrolog. The album's title, Gnosis, means divine or spiritual knowledge and understanding. It is their third studio album and the first to be recorded in 27 years. The album was mostly recorded at Select Sound Studios, Cairns, Australia, where it was engineered and produced by Nigel Pegrum. "Repent Harlequin", "Two Helens" and the title track were all recorded at Music City Studios, London, engineered by Joe Suarez and produced by Nessa Glen, in courtesy of Sarastro Music. The album was mostly published by Kempyre Music, except "Two Helens", which was published by Sarastro Music. Chris Copping of Procol Harum played his Hammond B3 Organ for a couple of tracks, which were recorded in Woodstock Studios, Melbourne and engineered by Tim Dudfield. Post production is credited to David J Burrows and Stewart Goldring. The album was mastered by David J Burrows at Disques rue Bis. The album is noted to be eclectic not only for its transcontinental recording but also for the use of traditional instruments such as the Australian aboriginal, didgeridoos. The album marks the band's comeback, which had also prompted the release of the Live 1972 album. In order to release some of the Goldring brothers' original material, the album was a renewed cooperation with the other 1970s Gnidrolog members, with the addition of Rick Kemp of Steeleye Span and Nessa Glen.

08 October 2019: A Tribute to Candy Lozier aka Candy L, Part II

A Last Sunset: A Celebration of Candy Lozier, Volume I

In September 2019, the music world lost a true force.

Candy Lozier (Candy L) was a composer, performer, label founder, fan, advisor, supporter, confidant, collaborator, and all-around cheerleader for the music and artists she loved. She founded the netlabel Studio4632.com and shepherded the release of over 200 albums spanning the range of ambient, experimental, and neo-classical electronic music (or whatever else her friends and artists were up to.)

This compilation (which will be at least 2 volumes) is a celebration by her friends, artists, collaborators, supporters, and listeners of her life, her work, and her never-ending support.

It's appropriate to begin this collection with one of her favorite pieces, and one of Cousin Silas' most played tracks - "Song For Candy." The collection will end with a track by Cousin Silas and Candy from material from their last (still unreleased) collaboration sessions. It is the final collaboration.

Any funds received from these memorial albums will be forwarded to Candy's sister, Jeannine, to donate in Candy's name to an appropriate cause.

From Jeannine: "... she was a gem, she was 63 years old. She loved music ever since she was a kid. She was also a gifted artist. She was very multi talented, creative, intelligent, and clever. Always a hard worker. Personally, she was kind, generous, a lot of fun, interesting. She'd give you the shirt off your back. She was my BFF and I miss her so much".

The stunning outpouring and diversity of these tracks is a tribute to Candy's life, her vision, and its importance to so many of us. These first three hours are just a beginning of keeping the music and that vision alive.
