Ian Boddy and Scanner  Juxtapositions (DiN97)

Scanner (UK musician Robin Rimbaud) has previously released two solo albums on the DiN imprint, namely An Ascent (DiN63) and The Homeland of Electricity (DiN72), as well as being included on several of the label’s compilation albums. He also performed alongside label boss Ian Boddy at the Subliminal Impulse festival in Manchester back in 2022, and although this concert was well received, the duo didn’t take their collaborative efforts further at that time. However, here we are four years down the line, and this pair of renowned musicians have finally combined their multitude of talents on Juxtapositions.

In many ways, both Boddy and Rimbaud operate in different sound worlds, but such diversity is often the catalyst for the best form of musical collaboration. The nine tracks on the album gently oscillate between hypnotic cycling patterns and nebulous, ambient soundscapes. The music plays as a continuous suite of tracks, which segue into each other and create a dream-like journey that constantly shifts the listener’s focus. Interspersed with field recordings from old houses and reverberant cellars, as well as Rimbaud’s signature radio chatter, the music is both abstract and emotive. The concept of deep listening is well known to the electronic music fraternity, and certainly, this album will benefit greatly from such an approach, as this will unveil its delicate beauty and hidden depths.

Over the course of the DiN label’s extensive catalogue, Boddy has collaborated with many diverse musicians. With this release, once again, such musical connections between different sonic voices has produced an album of outstanding quality.

                                          Shallow Margins - Tule

For the next in the quiet details series, we are pleased to present a collaboration between Craig Tattersall, the humble bee, and Alex Gold, fields we found - here as the shallow margins, with tule.

Inspired by a mutual love of ecology and fragments of sound, and the margins of our lives - shaped into musical form.

Quiet and textural - these pieces are a view through misted glass, clouded and suggesting a reflection on the layers found within. Emotions conveyed through hand-played instruments, magnetic tape and the patina of many generations of recording.

Sharing sounds back-and-forth - piano, harmonium, field recordings, long free-form experiments from collections of instruments and more. Recorded and looped on multiple tape machines and old samplers - coaxing out the underlying sonic remnants, and bringing those traces into view.

Endless thanks to Craig for this, and his constant inspiration.

The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - originating from a photo from the humble bee which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.

As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom six-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.

The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, unique and representing the music in its purest form.

The ambient lineage, from Brian Eno’s Music for Airports forward, has been characterized as sounds that can recede into the background, creating an absence that exists laterally to the listener’s attention. The Kinetic Void originated from a different premise. The compositions assembled here retain a commitment to atmosphere, putting texture over melody and suspending conventional notions of meter. But they embody an inverted relationship to density from that of the tradition. These pieces are present, saturating and confronting the listener with detail, weight, and structural complexity, yet stopping short of being pure noise.
There is no settled name for this particular style of music. It has no genre, though it can be described in terms of adjacencies: the more abrasive moments of Ben Frost, the looping decay of William Basinski, the layered distortion of some Tim Hecker pieces. When I put together the call for submissions for what became The Kinetic Void, I felt as if I was throwing a dart while blindfolded, hoping that I hit a target that I could not fully articulate. It was a leap of faith that the artists who answered the call would understand what I intended – that the void of the title was not a space to be preserved but a vacancy to be intentionally overloaded by the compositional act. I was not disappointed. The ten tracks of this album take these notions in different and even surprising directions. The densities of these pieces vary along compositional, textural, and emotional axes. Some artists, such as Nihil Impvlse and Soloi Sounds, develop intricate, overlapping strata. Others explore the capacity of a single instrument, as in the guitar work of Gianluca Becuzzi and Robert Thurman.
Richard Bégin presents a work based around a three-note pattern that builds to a crescendo before falling back into quietude. Browning Mummery explores patterns of percussion in combination with feedback and swirling noise. Rumore and William St. Hugh’s contributions are two sides of the same coin, the former focused on sculpted distortion, the latter on a haunting soundscape that uses tension to fill space. Similarly, Mario Lino Stancati employs echoes and processing as load bearing elements. Autistici closes the album with dissonant fragments drawn from instruments, field recordings, and synthetic sources. I am grateful to these artists who answered the call. What began as a question about how silence might be populated has become, across these ten pieces, a set of answers. The void has been filled for now, and in ways that I had not considered.

Weird Bones
This is an album that asks us to consider what ambient is, but it’s an album that also asks us to consider what music itself is, why we enjoy what we enjoy. Sometimes it’s okay to listen to something that doesn’t initially make a lot of sense, because if you give it the time it needs, it might end up telling you something you didn’t realise you needed to hear.

Bad Alchemy
The oxymoron of Kinetic Void (USG122) reads like an attempt to build the photographic negative of 'Ambient Techno', reversing it entirely. Background and atmosphere become a complex, restless, blindfolded approach. Together with Mike Borealla from Avant Music News, Raffaele Pezzella has gathered ten attempts to touch the desert and the void, in the microcosm and in the macrocosm: Prof. Richard Bégin in Montreal with 'Ubik' as a cryonic lullaby. His countryman Nihil Impvlse with 'Malignant Accretion' as a surrendering, grinding surf. Gianluca Becuzzi in Rome with the fatally surrendering 'Liturgy of Void'. Soloi Sounds in Tokyo with 'Ordinary' as a melancholic postscript, a tender what if not? Browning Mummery in Terra Australis with distorted pain and merciless loop in 'Persistence in Absence'. Mario Lino Stancati from Mesagne with 'The short distance between two deserts' as a wistful 'from dust to dust'. Robert Thurman in Tennessee, in electric guitar driven, turbulent drama with 'Convergence'. Rumore (?) with a plaintive guitar and sawtooth rough drones in 'Mustang'. William St Hugh in Fairhaven with 'Andromeda', which after a touchingly monotonous beginning drifts anxiously toward doomsday. And Autistici in Sheffield with 'Recoverse 79S', guitar waves and guitar farts in stereophonic minor key. Soundtrack for sleepwalking into chaos? [BA 135 rbd]

Huis biography
Founded in Québec, Canada in 2009

Huis ("home doors" in french, and "house" in dutch) is a five member musical project from Québec officially formed by Pascal LAPIERRE (keyboards) and Michel JONCAS (bass) at the end of 2009, after an oustanding and inspiring trip in the Netherlands.

At that time, they decided to put on tape (read hard drive!) some ideas they had in mind since a long time. Over time, three other talented musicians, William REGNIER (drums), Sylvain DESCOTEAUX (vocals) and Michel ST-PERE, this last musician from the band MYSTERY (guitars) joined the band, each one bringing a special touch to Huis' sound.

The music is a well crafted progressive rock with a symphonic touch and the use of Hammond, Moog and Mellotron takes us back to the old prog rock sound of the 70's. The guitar playing of St-Pere brings a big influence of the Neo-Prog band MYSTERY and many others Neo-Prog bands that put the melody and vocals upfront with strong compositions skills. The band has released is first studio album in January 2014, " Despite Guardian Angels".

Reviewed by Marc on 30 Jan 2014

First album from this Canadian Neo Prog band. Huis is made up of french speaking Canadians, but listening to Sylvain Descôteaux on lead vocals, this band could easily pass for a Manchester or Liverpool based group.

The most well known (at least to me) member of Huis is Michel St-Père, leader of Mystery, a band that has a gained an international reputation, partly because of ex-Yes Benoit David on lead vocals. Because of that, there are some excellent guitars to be heard on Despite Guardian Angels, but this is certainly not the only positive point of this excellent CD. Pascal Lapierre on keyboards also takes on a prominent role, having a constant presence in the music and offering a number of interesting solos. The rythm section (i.e. Michel Joncas and William Régner) is impeccable and Descôteaux's vocals are just great, his powerfull yet very melodic voice being better than the great majority of lead singers of today's most well known Neo Prog bands.

The compositions on Despite Guardian Angels are all very good, very symphonic in nature, alternating powerfull pieces with more melodic and emotional ones. If I were to pick a band as an acceptable reference, it would be late 90's or early 00's Arena, and Despite Guardian Angels compares easily with their best CDs.

Those wanting to hear some great Neo Prog should certainly seek out this new album by Huis. In my humble opinion, Despite Guardian Angels is one of the best Neo Prog album to come out in quite a while. Don't miss it.

My highest recommendation indeed.

Night Falls is a literary anthology inspired by the universe of Twin Peaks, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The book brings together eight original short stories that explore the emotional, symbolic, and metaphysical territory it has carved into the collective imagination. At the heart of Twin Peaks lies a fragile balance between familiarity and unease, between everyday rituals and the presence of something deeply unsettling beneath the surface. Night Falls embraces this tension, moving through small towns, isolated landscapes, domestic interiors, dreams, and thresholds where reality begins to fracture. The writers approach Twin Peaks as a condition of perception. Their stories resonate with themes that have long defined the work of Lynch and Frost: duality, hidden violence, trauma, the instability of time, and the uneasy coexistence of innocence and corruption. Some narratives lean toward psychological introspection, others toward the uncanny or the metaphysical, yet all share a sensitivity to atmosphere, rhythm, and suggestion rather than explanation. Night Falls extend the resonance of Twin Peaks into new and independent fictional forms. It invites the reader to remain within ambiguity, to accept disorientation, and to listen carefully to what emerges when the lights fade and the night begins to speak.

This compilation continues a path that Unexplained Sounds Group has been developing over time, following the earlier CD project inspired by Eraserhead. While that release focused on the cinematic origins of David Lynch’s language, this new work turns its attention to Twin Peaks, the television series created by Lynch and Mark Frost that profoundly reshaped the relationship between narrative, sound and perception on the small screen. First broadcast in 1990, Twin Peaks initially aired for two seasons between 1990 and 1991, before returning in 2017 with a third season that radically redefined the boundaries of television storytelling. From the outset, the series introduced an unprecedented fusion of crime drama, soap opera, surrealism and metaphysical horror, filtered through Lynch’s authorial vision as director and Frost’s narrative architecture. What began as an apparently familiar small-town mystery gradually evolved into an increasingly unstable universe, dissolving linear narration and pushing television into territories that were previously unthinkable. Across its three seasons, Twin Peaks expanded into a complex exploration of dreams, alternate realities, fragmented identities and temporal dislocation, transforming the medium of television into a space for long-form experimentation and subconscious...  more

With Night Falls. Music Inspired by David Lynch's Twin Peaks (USG117), Raffaele Pezzella deepens the reverence for the thrill of David Lynch's fantastical cinema already demonstrated with The Eraserhead (USG110). Five of the fellow devotees were already involved the first time around: Craig Varian, with 400 Lonely Things as "Dark New Age for the New Dark Age" and his hauntological fondness for the Green Man and for Thoreau, lets 'Butterfly' drift through melancholic guitar loops. Kabra darkens the Red Room with 'Black Soil' and lets a Haunted Ballroom and Skull Island echo through the walls. Mark Hjorthoy in Vancouver, together with David Strother in Olympia, WA, sets 'A Rabbit In The Moon' spinning with trembling guitar strings. Oubys, the USG-seasoned Wannes Wolf in Hasselt, lays mournfully plucked flowers on the grave of Julee Cruise (1956–2022) with 'For Julee'. And Richard Bégin — the professor of Media & Film Studies in Montreal, fascinated by H.R. Giger, William Gibson, Philip K. Dick, ESP and Gysin's Dreamachine, and a perennial USG guest — offers 'Dale Cooper's Doppelgänger', humming, distorted and sorrowful. Joel Gilardini, the drone-loving, doomsterish guitarist in Zurich, already a fellow reader of J.G. Ballard and Neuromancer and a contributor to tributes to Dario Argento and Dreamachine, is now also Lynched with 'Traces to Nowhere'. David Kovacs, a Hungarian between fog and facts, between night and dawn, unsettles and seduces on 'Dreaming in a Grey Lodge' with knocking sounds, bass strokes, and dreamlike guitar tones. Mario Lino Stancati, the éminence grise of USG and Eighth Tower, ranging from Burroughs, Cronenberg, Dante, Dracula, Fulci, Hellraiser to Lovecraft, Poe and Tarkovsky, is naturally here too, with 'Fire Walks Through Wires' — demonic yet with thundersheet irony. Paolo L. Bandera (of Sshe Retina Stimulants), another node in Pezzella's network, has infernally orchestrated 'Agente Atomico Episodico' as a ghost-train revue with gurgling voices. Yousef Kawar, oscillating in New York between guitar rock and dark ambient, tilts once more toward the dark side with 'Whispers in the Black Lodge'. Rapoon takes us with 'Snoqualmie Falls' to the original locations in Washington, elegiacally stirring strings and keys. Zuleika AvTes, who came from Brazil to London, shows as Glass Isle — with her whispers and stippling on 'Haze' — that Lynch fascinates women too, as of course he does. Pierre Laplace in Lille, once singer-guitarist in Vera Clouzot (with Peter Orins on drums), then the male half of The Sandman's Orchestra and finally alone as Beyond the Ghost, draws 'The Velvet Curtain' closed with billowing strings, reverberant piano tones, glockenspiel, and a frail JazzNoir trumpet.

Weird Bones
The real triumph of ‘Night Falls’ is that it doesn’t pretend to offer clarity. Each artist approaches the material like someone walking into a room where the lights keep changing colour – you adjust, you squint, you shrug, you keep going. The compilation honours the series by refusing to sand down its edges or explain its logic. It just lets the unease breathe.

Wish You Were Here has been a mainstay on all-time greatest albums lists for decades. The multi-Platinum-selling #1 hit record was Pink Floyd’s first to reach the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming the band’s fastest selling album. In 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon had taken Pink Floyd from a hugely successful breakout British band to one of the biggest rock groups on the planet. Wish You Were Here was the band’s powerful response to their newfound global fame.

Featuring the multi-part eulogy to Syd Barrett ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’, the hypnotic ‘Welcome To The Machine’, the scathing ‘Have a Cigar’ with its immortal line “Oh by the way, which one’s Pink?” famously sung not by Waters or Gilmour, but by non band-member Roy Harper, and the essential title track, Wish You Were Here is undoubtedly one of the most important album releases in the history of popular music.

The record’s themes of absence, isolation, transience, and comment on the insincerity of the music business are embodied in the iconic album artwork. The visual puns developed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell at Hipgnosis remain instantly recognisable visual statements today.

Remembering that time, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said:

“In the 1970s, album covers were equally as important as the music, because the cover helped to sell the record. Record stores would carry 10,000 different images in album sleeves, so what we were doing had to look different and stand out amongst the crowd.

I remember turning around to Storm and saying, how are we going to set a man on fire? Because there was no digital way of doing it in those days. He said, Po, you’re just going to have to do it for real. That was it.

One has to remember that Pink Floyd were the only band on EMI and Capitol Records who had the rights to the creative – in terms of album cover – besides the Beatles. That’s why we were allowed to do what we wanted. It was brilliant. Just the same way that Pink Floyd were a very inventive band at the time, so were Hipgnosis. We were determined to keep that abstract, enigmatic image alive and hence, we were able to do that for Pink Floyd.”

In 2025 the ardent support and fascination surrounding Pink Floyd’s music remains. The newly restored version of their groundbreaking 1972 film Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII stormed box offices around the world, with the live album debuting at #1 on the UK Albums Chart, marking the band’s first UK chart-topper in eleven years and the seventh in their career. The film was praised by critics and audiences the world over, with The Guardian describing it as a “mesmerically peculiar portrait of a band on cusp of greatness.” 50 years since its release, Wish You Were Here sounds as resonant and vital as ever, and in reaching this milestone deserves to be celebrated anew. This special anniversary edition allows fans, for the first time, to delve deeper into a pivotal moment in Pink Floyd’s history.

The Dreamachine, conceived in 1959 by Brion Gysin in collaboration with the mathematician Ian Sommerville, was an experiment in expanded consciousness. A flickering cylinder of light designed to be viewed with closed eyes, it sought to induce visionary states, to dissolve the boundaries of perception, and to reveal the inner landscapes of the mind. Gysin regarded it as the first work of art meant to be seen with the eyes shut, an inversion of traditional aesthetics, turning vision inward rather than outward. It was around the aura of the Dreamachine that Gysin’s creative alliance with William S. Burroughs deepened. Both artists shared an obsession with breaking down systems of control, linguistic, social, and perceptual. Gysin’s discovery of the cut-up technique became one of Burroughs’ most radical tools, just as Burroughs’ prose amplified Gysin’s explorations into altered states and the mechanics of thought. Together, they envisioned what they called The Third Mind: a new consciousness that could emerge from the fusion of two creative intelligences, transcending individuality and generating something other, stranger, and more powerful than either artist alone. This compilation invites contemporary musicians to pay tribute to that visionary partnership. Each track seeks to channel the spirit of experimentation, psychedelia, and radical perception that defined their work, whether through hypnotic repetition, immersive soundscapes, or altered states of sonic awareness. What emerges is a collective attempt to listen through the ears of The Third Mind itself, and to continue the experiment Gysin and Burroughs began more than half a century ago.

This release is an independent tribute inspired by the work of Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs and Ian Sommerville. It is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by their estates.

AIRBAG – Dysphoria (Live in the Netherlands)

RELEASE YEAR: 2025
BAND URL: https://airbagsound.bandcamp.com/album/airbag-dysphoria-live-in-the-netherlands

A live album by Norwegian prog rock stalwarts Airbag is not something to be taken lightly; it is a huge-sounding representation of some of their most outstanding and inspired epics being performed by a tight, well-oiled machine that knows exactly how to stir the senses and stimulate the mind of the audience. Captured for posterity at the legendary and prog-friendly venue Poppodium Boerderij in Zoetermeer last year and bolstered by a perfectly crisp sound adding heaps of atmospherics to the proceedings, this offering serves as a great reminder of just how emotionally charged these fine compositions truly are and how well they translate to the live format and context.

Compared to their studio counterparts, the eight tracks included here contain a little more vigor and vibrancy, benefitting from being played organically in front of an appreciative audience. The pristine riffs and beautiful melodies steadily work their magic and transport you elsewhere, and although the arrangements differ very little from the studio versions, there is joy to be found in these slightly more muscular and punchy live pieces. Different nuances are highlighted and emphasized, thereby creating an excellent alternative to what it means to immerse oneself in the outfit’s richly textured world of sound. As fabulous are these chaps are in the studio, their Pink Floyd-esque material really comes alive on stage as evidenced by Dysphoria.

This is a wonderful celebration of a stellar (and ongoing) career and also a stunning display of just how fearfully ambitious and thoroughly timeless Airbag’s song material unarguably is. Old fans will want this, but newbies could potentially begin here also. If you are a fan of Steven Wilson, No-Man, and Porcupine Tree, you cannot allow yourself to miss out on this inspired act’s upcoming opus.

Originally released in 2016 as Analog 2020, this newly remastered edition appears on CD for the first time, featuring three previously unreleased tracks. Reimagined as Analog 2025, it celebrates and reaffirms the enduring spirit of analog electronic music in an era increasingly shaped by digital tools and AI-driven processes. Featuring visionary artists such as Robert Rich, Sonologyst, Simon Balestrazzi, and Pharmakustik, among others, the compilation pays tribute to those who continue to explore the richness and unpredictability of analog machines. These artists reject sterile perfection in favor of the warmth, instability, and tactile expressiveness that only analog gear can deliver.
Nearly a decade after its original release, Analog 2025 stands as both a document and a manifesto — a celebration of a global movement of musicians who view analog synthesis not as a nostalgic indulgence, but as a vital creative choice: an act of resistance and authenticity in a hyper-digitized world.
