Tone Science Module No.10 The Final Patch (DiN:TS10)
Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, concludes its exploration of the world of modular synth music.

Since the first volume in the Tone Science series was released in 2018, seventy-two musicians in total have joined in with this celebration of the musical possibilities of modular synthesis. These artists have been from a huge range of backgrounds but have all shared the unifying purpose of showcasing the incredible variety of sonic possibilities these instruments can offer.

The intervening seven years have seen the modular synth world expanding at an exponential rate and whilst one wouldn’t go so far as to say these synths are mainstream, they are certainly far more prevalent than in the past. It’s especially gratifying to see so many musicians now either play solo sets with them or to include them in their onstage arsenal.

Thus we come to this, the final instalment in the Tone Science series. Nothing lasts forever and certainly stopping at this nice round number of ten seems like a good way to not only end the series but to release the Final Patch, a real celebration of what has gone before and perhaps to hint at what is possible for the future. A beautifully packaged double CD featuring twenty artists who have appeared on previous iterations of the series, it really is a who’s who of modular synth musicians. The release is accompanied by an eight-page booklet with an essay by Neil Mason and some final words from the guiding force behind the whole project, Ian Boddy, label boss at DiN. And as Boddy so succinctly puts it in his liner notes, “for me, despite the technological nature of the equipment, the emotional quality of the music is the single most important factor”. The Final Patch certainly delivers on that ethos.

Listener Reviews:

dbssll Parallel Worlds is an original and distinctive voice in a sea of samey electronic music. Off kilter quirky rhythms alternate with slightly uneasy ambience. The melodic fragments always arrive from an unexpected angle and catch your ear as they float by. Give it a go.

selfoscillate Another great album by modular master Bakis Sirros, crafted in his instantly recognisable style. His music arouses emotions without the need for overcrowded arrangements. The melodies speak for themselves and the delicate percussion programming is the perfect surrounding for them. It is all done to the point without clutter. Very nice. Fully recommended. Favorite track: Time Dimension.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luck and Strange is the fifth studio album by English guitarist and songwriter David Gilmour, released on 6 September 2024 by Sony Music. It was produced by Gilmour and Charlie Andrew. Gilmour said Andrew challenged him musically and was not intimidated by his past work with Pink Floyd.

Gilmour's wife, novelist Polly Samson, wrote most of the lyrics, which she said addressed mortality and ageing. Their children contributed additional vocals, lyrics and instrumentation. The song "Luck and Strange" features keyboards recorded in 2007 by the Pink Floyd keyboardist, Richard Wright, who died in 2008. The album also features a cover of the 1999 song "Between Two Points," originally by the British band the Montgolfier Brothers.

Luck and Strange became Gilmour's third number-one album on the UK Albums Chart. "The Piper's Call," "Between Two Points," "Dark and Velvet Nights" and "Luck and Strange" were released as singles. Gilmour began a tour supporting the album in September 2024.

Parallel Worlds Fragmented (DiN83)

Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros who records under the name of Parallel Worlds has become a familiar name to followers of the DiN label. His debut release was “Obsessive Surrealism” (DiN26) back in 2007 and since then he has released two further solo albums, “Shade” (DiN32) and “Plector” (DiN76), as well as several collaborative albums with different artists including DiN label boss Ian Boddy & Node guru Dave Bessell.

This fourth sonic journey from Sirros on the DiN imprint sees him focusing in on his modular synthesiser systems, especially the Eurorack format with some able support from Buchla. These massive constructed patches live and breath like a crepuscular organism waking from its slumber. Indeed “Fragmented” is bookended by two wonderfully deep, textural tracks appropriately titled “Dawning” and “Sunset”. With the exception of the organ-like drone soundscape of “Time Flow” the remaining seven tracks encapsulate everything we have come to expect from this unique artist, namely dark, menacing bass lines overlaid with glitchy percussive patterns and beguiling, floating melody lines. It has certainly be noted before, but is worth reiterating, that there is a certain John Carpenter like soundtrack quality to the music of Sirros. Seemingly simplistic they shroud a wealth of detail and beauty that is revealed over repeated listening.

Lovers of Electronica, Dark Techno, Downtempo & IDM will find much to admire in “Fragmented” and this new album once again showcases the unique talent of this highly individual musician.

                                                Ian Boddy Modal Operandi

Music by Ian Boddy
Mastered by Alex at quiet details studios
Artwork by quiet details in collaboration with Wendy Carroll
Design by quiet details

For the next interpretation of quiet details, we have a true innovator active in the music world since the late 70s - the pioneering composer and sound artist, Ian Boddy.

Since the early days experimenting with synths and tape machines inspired by the likes of Tangerine Dream, Ian has forged a career at the leading edge of analogue synthesis, digital sound design and beyond - recording many solo albums and running the iconic DiN label, bridging the gap between the early synth records and modern explorations.
He’s also a highly-accomplished live performer - playing all over the world to much acclaim.

With Modal Operandi, he has made a truly wonderful and deeply thoughtful interpretation - entirely in the analogue domain, with each track based on a highly- processed field recording.

The album is constructed in the key of C Major, with each successive track moving through the musical modes of that scale - as is apparent in track names - Ionian, Dorian and so on.

Ian is a master synthesist - each track uses a stunning array of classic and modern synth and effects - from classic Roland and EMS, to Serge and Eurorack modular, to modern Moog and Buchla to name a few. Vast and strange worlds are conjured with rich and highly textured synthesis and by using multiple reverbs and delay, again all analogue to create organic and beautifully vibrant soundscapes.

Ian is one of few technical geniuses that has the capacity to use these skills in a uniquely musical way - melodies and harmonies blend perfectly with each other as each track develops - this is an album of beauty in every respect.

As Ian says: “a sonic journey in seven musical modes”

Full kit list:
Roland system 100-M, Serge & Eurorack modulars Moog Matriarch & Voyager
Buchla Easel Command, VCS3 & Resonant Garden French Connection & 0-coast
Treated field recordings
Analogue phaser & flanger
BBD & tape echo
Spring reverb

Huge thanks to Ian for this wonderful album and being a part of the series.

The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - we started with an original piece of art by Ian’s partner, Wendy Carroll, a hugely talented artist, which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.

As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom 6-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.

The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, representing the music in its purest form.

Stephen James Buckley aka Polypores returns for his second full album on the DiN imprint following on from his 2022 debut “Hyperincandescent” (DiN71):     Multizonal Mindscramble (DiN81)

Though we’ve come to know a wide range of sounds from Polypores, it’s here on “Multizonal Mindscramble” that we get plunged into the outer reaches of the inner psyche. Flickering insectoid transmissions are laid atop slowly shifting walls of drifting oscillators, barely discernible chirps and static-encrusted filter sweeps. There are moments of undeniable melodic bliss amongst the warm, weightless transmissions though, with soaring arpeggios and covert counter-melodies emerging from the fog and coalescing into perfect harmony before fading once again into the ether. The slow intricate weaving of sounds and timbres has become a Polypores trademark, and once again the fluidity and ease with which Buckley moves between sound-worlds is evident on this new album. The organic textures morph and grow, from a syncopated glitching oscillator through to slow swells of synth and spacey, cavernous reverb. Like a languid walk through the forest, while you gradually melt through the earth and into the soil.

A perfectly balanced textural odyssey, and a stunning example of the depth and breadth of the Polypores sound “Multizonal Mindscramble” is released both as a 180g Vinyl edition and a Digipak CD with stunning artwork from Wendy Carroll that matches the music perfectly.

Surface 10 is the moniker of Californian electronic musician Dean De Benedictus. He has previously released albums on the DiN label with In Vitro Tide (DiN8) & Surface Tensions (DiN24). Finishing a hiatus of over a decade, which saw him pursuing several film projects, he returns to DiN with a stunningly original new album, “A Stray Ending” (DiN77).

The DiN label has always actively encouraged the blurring of genre boundaries and with this new opus Dean has certainly done that with influences as far flung as Electronica, Ambient, IDM, Berlin School, Glitch, Progressive Jazz Fusion, World and Cinematic music. Such a heady mixture is immediately apparent on the opener “Neverheart” with its achingly beautiful and haunting chordal themes overlaid with an intertwining tapestry of percussion and glitched out effects. The album rises and falls through layers of dazzling sound design and compositional complexity to reach its apex with the freak-out intensity of “Azz”. The following track “Dorothy Spearhead” is perhaps the most concise piece on show here, with its vocal melodic hook and danceable drum groove. This leads into the spectacular “Non Fi” which propels the listener on an epic tour de force of electronic invention before the album closes with the melancholic shimmering beauty of “Universal Winter (Rework)”.

This new album from Surface 10 is almost beyond categorisation and is full of so many inventive and detailed sonic and musical elements that it will give the listener something new to focus in on each and every listen. Another truly unique addition to the DiN catalogue.

Karfagen — Ukrainian art rock band formed in 2006 by songwriter, architect and designer Antony Kalugin from Kharkiv, Ukraine. The music of Karfagen is mostly instrumental and combine elements of progressive rock, art rock and symphonic rock. Almost all songs and concepts of the band created by Antony Kalugin himself.[1]. By the end of 2018 band released nine albums and participated several European progressive rock festivals. The band don't have a constant line-up although since 2006 a lot of musicians from Ukraine and all around the world played there as a session musicians. Karfagen is mainly an instrumental band that shows imaginative use of keyboards, guitars, classical and ethnic instruments. Their music has strong connections and references to the music of the other Antony Kalugin projects — Hoggwash and Sunchild. According to Antony, the music of Karfagen is created under the influence of Camel, Genesis, UK, Pink Floyd and The Flower Kings among other art rock bands[2].

Review by apps79
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Honorary Collaborator

4 stars Ukraine-based band KARFAGEN is a somewhat personal best of young composer/keyboardist Antony Kalugin, who founded this project in 1997 (at the age of 16!),being himself a student at school. Before the turn of the millenium he started writing material for the first KARFAGEN album and actually the band played a few gigs as well, before they were put on ice with Kalugin following a personal career, mostly composing and participating on new-age albums.By mid- 00's Antony had been a self-employed musician,so he gave birth to his former band and recorded the long-awaited KARFAGEN debut in 2005 on the Canadian Unicorn Records.

His work can be easily compared to these of MIKE OLDFIELD,GANDALF and CAMEL if you add some more passion and energy to the compositions.Having next to him his fellow keyboardist Sergei Kovalev,Kalugin explores and unites the paths of Symphonic Rock,New Age and Electronic in a very adventuruous and highly attractive package.Lots of spacey floating electronics dominate the album along with pianos and some great organ parts, which give the album a grandiose symphonic taste, while the succesful addition of limited parts with cellos, harmonica, flutes and bagpipes give the album a folkier and almost oriental touch in parts.Among those sometimes bombastic themes weird effects (water, birds etc.) are added in order to calm a bit down the dynamics.Electric guitars are much carefully used with a main aim to rise up the energy and nerve of the music between the keyboard-based parts, sometimes also in a jazzy mood.I could say that most of the tracks contain from even a bit to a higher range of Kalugin's classical training, especially on the piano parts...and one more thing:Do not expect the music to be overall sweet and atmospheric. In ''Continium'' KARFAGEN offer a fair amount of complex ELP-ish breaks to make it even more attractive and challenging.

The final taste is more than positive.Intricate, balanced, adventuruous and marvelously arranged,''Continium'' was worth waiting and Kalugin made no mistake on insisting on this band's future. An excellent addition to your collection, especially if you are a fan both of Symphonic and keyboard-driven Progressive Rock.

Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros who records under the name of Parallel Worlds has become a familiar name to followers of the DiN label. His debut release was “Obsessive Surrealism” (DiN26) back in 2007 and since then he has released a further solo album, “Shade” (DiN32), as well as several collaborative albums with different artists including DiN label boss Ian Boddy & Node guru Dave Bessell.

“Plector” (DiN76) is his third solo outing on the DiN imprint and continues the deep dive into organic, analogue modular excursions that this talented musician is so adept at. Throbbing, deep bass lines are accompanied by sparse drum patterns and beguiling melodic synth lines. The album has a beautifully cohesive, dark and brooding atmosphere. Hints of a John Carpenter like synth soundtrack lurk around every corner but the sound world that Sirros creates is very much his own. At times the raw beauty of his synth patches grab you whilst at other moments the delicate, glitch like sound design details hover just out of sight. The album is built upon two groups of three rhythmic tracks interspersed with the dark drone of “Atmoform” and the beautiful, almost Enoesque final track, “Harmonic Pathways”.

Lovers of Electronica, Dark Techno, Downtempo & IDM will find much to admire in “Plector” and this new album once again showcases the unique talent of this highly individual musician.
