The Anaton Project is a Oslo-based progressive reminder of what can happen when musicians from very different backgrounds come together with a shared curiosity rather than a fixed formula. The band was founded by guitarist and vocalist Johnny Normann Berg, whose roots lie in neo-progressive rock, and quickly evolved into a collaborative project shaped by contrasting influences.

The current lineup features drummer Jimmy Dapper (The Lucky Bullets), bringing a rockabilly-informed sense of groove, Carl Fredrik Berg (The Multiverse Ensemble) on synthesizers and sound design, with a strong focus on analog textures, and bassist Magnus Charles Døssland Bjørnstad (Tempelheks), whose background in heavier music adds weight and edge. Together, they form a sound that moves freely between progressive rock, melodic songwriting, and exploratory arrangements.

The band released their debut EP Luck in late 2024, introducing a project still in motion but clearly defined by strong compositions and a willingness to cross stylistic boundaries.

Their first full-length album, The Ocean Conductor, was released on February 13, 2026. The album is a progressive concept record inspired by classic maritime literature, including The Odyssey, Moby-Dick, and The Old Man and the Sea, and presents a cohesive narrative framed by expansive arrangements and thematic songwriting.

REVIEW:  Not content to be a Winter Olympics powerhouse every four years, the space between is filled by a colossal fjord of incredible musical artists, most specifically within the progressive realm. Two Berg brothers are featured prominently, namely guitarist/vocalist Johnny Norman and Carl Fredrik, the keyboard man, ably assisted by a solid rhythmic crew of Magnus Charles Dossland Bjornstad and drum stool master Svein Age Lade Lillehamre (they each have four names because they have four tentacles). Debut album, so no preconceived notions nor any expectations, a situation that provides a clean slate to wander free and let the music decide. Though definitely on the more bombastic side of prog, clearly a concept on navigating the cruel seas and vast oceans, I am letting my hair down on this one, wherever the drakkar takes is fine with me.

“Blue Skies & Evidence of Things to Come (Chapter 1)” sets the ambitious mission onwards with a sombre intro, a whirlpool of striking cellos, forlorn narration and splashing waves, with piano tingling in the wake. The scorching upfront guitars steam full speed ahead, as the bass and drums initiate the route to be taken, ready for whatever nature brings, a compass and heartbeat in hand, and a distant siren seducing and beckoning the valiant to forge enough courage to resist any temptation. Exciting beginnings and a prefect set-up.

Sublime keyboards take the helm on “Mirador”, with austere orchestrations that temporarily hide the enormous tidal surge of overwhelming guitars that unfurl unchallenged. Inserting beams of sharp light into the storm, violins searching for salvation, warnings of imminent danger amid the rocky crags that the ocean hides in its endless ebb and flow.

Little girl narration and sweet piano, ‘the weather is perfect and the sky is blue’, the Starlette lament is a plea and a promise. “Lady Luna” maintains the subdued atmosphere, the cannonading drums mimic the sea’s infinite allure, and the high-pitched vocal is outright breathtaking. When the crushingly slow axe solo unfurls its sails, the paroxysm is reached due to a memorable melody that adheres immediately to the wet skin. Segueing into “Songs Only Sirens Sing” is so extraordinarily organic and absolute, the mind becomes embalmed in salty ocean spray, the gales turning into a breeze, the obscure sirens ahead perched on the stony bluffs. The intensity rises as the proximity dwindles, the unescapable power of nature in full regalia. Stunning cinematographic delight!

The titanic, effect-laden “The Hunt” is propelled by an unrelenting marine bass line, trembling strings, and enough flotsam and jetsam to sink an entire armada. Gradually, the raging surf reaches uncontrollable heights, the pace helter-skelter, clanging guitars clinging to watery riffs, mellotrons elevating the pursuit, a lead violin setting its sights on the hapless target.

Incredibly, there is never any victory ahead, as the grinding orchestrations ensure the most abysmal melancholy, on  “Reflections Under a Starless Map (Chapter 2)” like a ‘barnacle clinging to a prayer, my breath a threat’, the narration impeccably expressing the angst of always sitting on the edge of silence. The scream says it all.

The oppressive title track combines all the elements that make this release a poignant affair. The captain always goes down with his ship, not as an act of tradition but rather one of defiance, as well as a tacit respect for the authority of mother nature. The second half institutes all the fury of swirling tsunamis, the iron clad guitars grating against the hull, aware that, in the end, silence will join the unseen.

“Goodbye Starlette (Chapter 4)” means only that the drowning sailor will not see his daughter again, he will never return to port, swallowed whole within a moment into the darkness of a watery grave. The scream of doom returns for a final plunge, before disappearing into the merciless void. The longest piece combines sonic snippets of waves, winds and worry. The swerving strings become a eulogy to those who have braved the intensity of depths, where nadir meets zenith, what was once up is now below. The piano plays the mariner’s tale, the effusive choir singing the praise of the valiant. What an emotional finale. Gulp!

A superb discovery, much more that I even hope for. Time for me to get out of these drenched clothes and have some well-deserved rum.

Mark Hjorthoy's "The Static Between Heartbeats" opens against the noise of constant connection, the endless stream of tools designed to keep us tethered, distracted, elsewhere. Against this saturation, the album proposes a threshold: a passage between presence and abstraction, between signal and static. The recordings follow a path upward, away from the device, through trees, through silence, through the slow accumulation of sound into atmosphere. Nature's rhythm becomes an electronic pulse here, filtered through memory and distance. The forest breathes through the circuit. The sky opens through the drone. Static settles between heartbeats, a soundtrack for walking outside the feed, a hike suspended between the physical and the perceived.

Blind Architectures - Markus Reuter

These ambient miniatures were born over two days in May 2026, serving as both a sonic laboratory and a foundational exploration for an upcoming recording session. The guiding principle behind these sessions was the creation of atmosphere through intentional obscuration.

By routing the touch guitar through a heavily altered signal chain, incorporating a new array of effects pedals, deliberate distortion, and manipulated noise floors, the goal was to render sonic environments that evoke distinct "rainscapes" and "cityscapes."

The defining methodology of this collection is the "blind" recording process. The initial improvisations and textures were tracked entirely without monitoring, the faders pulled completely down. The act of composition then became an act of excavation. The music only revealed itself in the final stage, pushing the faders up to make the invisible architectures suddenly, and sometimes startlingly, visible.

The resulting pieces are brief, concentrated vignettes, averaging two to three minutes in length, capturing the exact moment a hidden landscape comes into focus.

Variant - While the Universe Sleeps

For the fiftieth release in the series, Quiet Details is thrilled to share an extended-length interpretation from a foundational figure in the electronic music world, the Detroit-based Stephen Hitchell, here as variant with while the universe sleeps.

Describing the importance of Stephen’s contribution to electronic music is a huge task - born out of the visionary axis between Detroit, Chicago and Berlin, he built on structures laid by those before him to create a universe of vast depth and sonic beauty. Along with many collaborators, his label echospace [detroit] became a home for forwarding-thinking dub-spirited music.

This, and numerous releases on other labels, including the seminal The Coldest Season on Modern Love with regular partner Rod Modell, and ground-breaking live performances everywhere from Berghain to Movement, made Stephen indivisible from any conversation of the most important artists of our time.

Under the guise of variant, we might find Stephen at his deepest, as he puts it:
"score the constellation of mystical events occurring in the depths of space”

With while the universe sleeps, he has achieved something remarkable. As with all the variant music, Stephen takes influence from the vast recesses of the cosmos, both imaginatively and sonically.

Drawing on NASA’s sound archive, “the vast echoes of space have been manipulated and resynthesized throughout the duration of this sonic experience.”

Through decades of dedication to his craft, Stephen has become a producer of almost unparalleled skill - all seen through the lens of formative years immersed in the inception and evolution of techno, house, ambient and countless detours.

All this is brought to bear on while the universe sleeps - a truly masterful deep-space voyage, eighty minutes submerged in cathartic waves of interstellar bliss.

Infinitely spacious - echoing chords and endlessly sustaining pads establish an emotional core, surrounded by highly-processed astral transmissions and organic analogue noise. Always underpinned by sub-bass reminiscent of the lowest frequencies emanating from the studios of Jamiaca, that are also of massive significance to Stephen’s work.

Huge thanks to Stephen, an incredible addition to the series.

The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - originating from a photo from Stephen which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.

As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom six-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.

The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, unique and representing the music in its purest form.

Sacro Bosco (“Sacred Grove”) is the starting point for Anna von Hausswolff’s new album All Thoughts Fly, incoming on Southern Lord on 25th September. Here in solo instrumental mode, the entire record consists of just one instrument, the pipe organ, and represents absolute liberation of the imagination. All Thoughts Fly radiates a melancholic beauty, and is distinguished by fluid transitions of contrasting elements; calmness and drama, harmony and dissonance, much like the place that inspires the music.

Sacro Bosco is a garden, based in the centre of Italy, containing grotesque mythological sculptures and buildings overgrown with vegetation, situated in a wooded valley beneath the castle of Orsini. Created during the 16th Century, Sacro Bosco was commissioned by Pier Francesco Orsini, some say to try and cope with his grief following the death of his wife Guilia Farnese, others speculate the purpose was to create art.

About the album Anna explains “there’s a sadness and wilderness that inspired me to write this album, also a timelessness. I believe that this park has survived not only due to its beauty but also because of the iconography, it has been liberated from predictable ideas and ideals. The people who built this park truly set their minds and imagination free. All thoughts fly is a homage to this creation, and an effort to articulate the atmosphere and the feelings that this place evokes inside of me. It’s a very personal interpretation of a place that I lack the words to describe. I’d like to believe Orsini built this monumental park out of grief for his dead wife, and in my Sacro Bosco I used this story as a core for my own inspiration: love as a foundation for creation.”

The accompanying video for the first single "Sacro Bosco" is, just like the music, an interpretation of the park with an imaginary twist. Directed by Gustaf and Ludvig Holtenäs.

Anna summarises, “Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo is a creation carved out from one man’s head. A frozen thought lasting throughout time and touching people across generations. All thoughts fly, Ogni Pensiero Vola, is about this: the importance of sharing for surviving, creating space and evolving. Once you’ve shared your words they are not only yours anymore."

All Thoughts Fly ultimately embodies the exploration of any and all possibilities, and the audience is invited to listen, liberate the mind and let it wander.

Notes on the recording process:

The organ on All Thoughts Fly is situated in Gothenburg and is a Swedish replica of the Arp Schnitger organ in Germany. It is the largest organ tuned in Quarter-comma meantone temperament in the world. With it’s four manuals, one pedal and 54 stops, it was built as part of a ten-year research project reconstructing 17th Century North German organ building craft. The tuning temperament is an important detail to note here, as it deeply affects the sound and tuning, and thus radically changed the process of creating this album. Anna speaks of a pleasant surprise during recording, the organ's ability to create beautiful "pitching" notes through its stops and air supply system. She remarks “We took advantage of this so most of the pitching sounds and notes that you hear on the album comes from the mechanics of this organ, effects made entirely acoustically." The organ was recorded with two room mics for atmosphere and two pairs of close mics placed inside the organ to capture nuances and detail for further organ sound processing by Filip Leyman in his studio.

01 Nov 2016: KMXT Pledge Drive Edition + Ian Boddy New Release: "As Above So Below" (DiN51)

The first half of tonight's show will feature local Kodiak band, Waterbound.  We'll be playing music from their three CDs and talking about the band and the reasons why you should become a new or renewing member of public radio KMXT.

The second half of the show will feature DiN51 | 2016 | Limited to 500 copies on CD & 250 copies on vinyl
Release date 18th November 2016

Ian Boddy, DiN label boss, has never been a musician to rest on his laurels. After the totally analogue, experimental “Tone Science” (DiN49) he now moves onto fresh sonic pastures with his new solo album “As Above So Below”. Boddy has always liked to play around with genres, mixing and matching styles to suit his current frame of mind. On “As Above So Below” he effortlessly combines ambient, classical & electronic music into a seamless, intoxicating sonic landscape. Boddy has been heavily involved in composing library music for many years that feature in TV, films and documentaries and he brings this filmic quality to bear on this suite of six tracks.
The title track opens procedures with a great slab of slowly evolving orchestral chords that rise up out of a cold, ethereal atmosphere. Based on Prelude No.1 in C Major by J. S. Bach this awe inspiring opening piece sets the scene for what is to follow. Arpeggiating piano tones, deep Moog basses, ethereal string clusters & analogue sequencers all vie for attention in the following five tracks. The latter are at times light and playful with interlocking layers on tracks such as “Quantum Of Memory” and “The Thaumaturge” whereas an all together darker vibe is created on the deep bass pulses of the brooding track “Shrine”. The final track “One Day” finishes the album off in an emotional manner with rising string melodies above haunting felt piano arpeggios before finally disappearing back into the eerie atmosphere that opened the album.
As usual this album will be released in the elegant slimline digipak CD package that followers of DiN will be familiar with. However there will also be a limited edition 180g vinyl album package as well which will include a download code. Both formats will feature a stunning, minimal image by photographic artist Wendy Carroll. Once again DiN have produced a quality release in highly collectable formats for all lovers of modern, ambient electronica.
