The Harmony Codex is the seventh studio album by British musician Steven Wilson, released on 29 September 2023 through Virgin Music Group.[4][5]

Background

The record was first announced on 29 August 2023 with the release of lead single "Economies of Scale".[6] Since then, the tracks "Impossible Tightrope", "Rock Bottom", and "What Life Brings" have been released as singles.

The album is said to be "a genre-spanning collection that opens up like a musical puzzle box" and musically more complex than Wilson's previous album.[7][8]

Along with the release of the standalone record, a three-disc limited edition featuring a collection of bonus tracks under the name Harmonic Distortion.[9]

Recording

Steven Wilson supposedly worked on the album "in a studio tucked inside a garage of a North London townhouse", piecing together the tracks with remote help from collaborators Ninet Tayeb, Craig Blundell, Adam Holzman, Jack Dangers, and Sam Fogarino.[10]

October 4th, 2023 Review Summary: Steven Wilson: A Feature Film Presentation

Let’s start this off with a quick exercise. First, I want you to take a listen to Steven Wilson’s 2013 opus The Raven That Refused to Sing. Even if you’ve heard it many times before, just take a moment to re-absorb that vintage prog majesty once again. The elaborate bass lines, the lush mellotrons, the jazz fusion tinges… yeah, that’s good stuff. Now that you’re done with that, let’s fast-forward to 2021 and revisit The Future Bites. The electropop sound, the (attempted) social commentary of the lyrics, the cold sparse atmosphere… now, that’s a stylistic 180 if I’ve ever heard one. Obviously Wilson was building up to the style found on The Future Bites – To the Bone definitely primed the pump for that – but when jumping straight from one end of his catalog to another, it’s enough to give one whiplash.

More than anything though, To the Bone and The Future Bites served as a message to his fans: expect the unexpected. For every elaborate prog number like “Luminol” or “Raider II”, there might be a dance-pop tune like “Permeating” or a bluesy rocker like “Eminent Sleaze” to catch you off-guard. And it’s this type of thinking that got me extremely curious about what Wilson would bring with The Harmony Codex. After all, what stylistic turn could he make after going all-in with the pop and electronic influences?

Well, Wilson did the best thing he could in this situation: take what actually worked on the previous record, and expand it into a more sprawling, cinematic experience. And he seemed poised to fully take advantage of this direction both aurally and visually, as the video for lead single “Economies of Scale” features two people dancing in a large chapel space with impressive choreography, shot entirely in one take. Oh, and Wilson himself makes a cameo appearance! See if you can spot him. Meanwhile, the music itself is just as grand and engaging; Wilson creates a complex tapestry of layered vocals, as the skittering Radiohead-style percussion gives the ornate instrumentation some grounding and tension. More than anything, “Economies of Scale” served as an excellent bridge between The Future Bites and the rest of The Harmony Codex.

Of course, much of the record delves even further into this sweeping musical territory. The other big single, and the one that Wilson really wanted people to be hyped for, is the 11-minute “Impossible Tightrope”. And how many lyrics do we get throughout this lengthy excursion? Three lines. That’s all we get. The rest of the track is an ambitious exercise in worldbuilding, including (but not limited to) the following highlights: wailing sax lines, cold post-punk-esque guitar leads, jazzy keyboard breaks, and a beautiful ambient section in the middle to cap it all off. And it’s at this moment that I realized something: The Harmony Codex as a whole is basically an olive branch between the traditional and modern prog sensibilities of Wilson’s solo career (granted, I suppose we already got this earlier on with Hand. Cannot. Erase., but still…).

While “Impossible Tightrope” might be the best example of that bridge, it’s certainly present elsewhere too. For another extended tune that exhibits this middle ground extremely well, we get the highly atmospheric title track. The guitars and synths drone on hypnotically as Wilson’s wife Rotem provides some lovely narration to flesh out the ambiance of the piece. From then on, it’s mostly a suspenseful post-rockish buildup for the rest of the song… simple in concept, but strong in execution. Still, this is not to say that Wilson’s abandoned that more tender, singer-songwriter side of his DNA, as cuts like the pensive alt-rocker “What Life Brings” and the emotionally gripping ballad “Rock Bottom” prove. The latter is especially notable because it marks the return of longtime collaborator Ninet Tayeb, as she and Wilson embark on the first duet together since 2017’s “Pariah” – and, as always, Tayeb brings the house down with her raw, passionate delivery.

Despite all of this praise, I can’t help but feel as though something’s missing here. It might have to do with the overall lack of these more self-contained, concise moments, but the aforementioned worldbuilding could stand to be reined-in at times. While the extended, sprawling pieces are neat from a conceptual and atmospheric perspective, they also make The Harmony Codex more emotionally distant at times and – dare I say – even a bit hollow. I did mention earlier that “Economies of Scale” was like a way of connecting The Future Bites and The Harmony Codex together, and this does apply to some of the other songs as well. Unfortunately, that also comes with the former album’s baggage – whether it be in moments of questionable songwriting, dull vocal inflections, or an overly synthetic vibe.

Still, this shouldn’t deter Steven Wilson fans from checking out The Harmony Codex, as it’s a huge step up from its predecessor. If anything, this is basically the direction he should have gone in immediately after To the Bone, as it seems like a logical development from that record’s electronica-tinged prog-pop style. In any case, this is essentially Wilson’s “cinematic” album, and allows him to play around with a wide variety of fun styles and experiments using that theme. It’s sprawling, it’s immersive, it’s widescreen, and – most of all – it’s a sign that our favorite(?) modern progger still has plenty left to say, even over 30 years into his illustrious career.

The fascination with abandoned haunted asylums is a topic that has captivated the interest of many people over the years. There are a few reasons why these locations tend to hold a certain allure. First of all Asylums have a rich and often dark history, which attracts those interested in exploring the past. These institutions were built during a time when mental health treatments were not well understood, and the conditions inside were often deplorable. The stories of patient mistreatment, unethical practices, and the overall eerie atmosphere make for compelling narratives. Abandoned asylums, with their decaying buildings, broken windows, and overgrown grounds, create an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. Also they have become the subject of numerous urban legends and ghost stories. Over time, these tales have contributed to the notion that abandoned asylums are haunted by the spirits of former patients or the ghosts of the past. This connection to the supernatural adds another layer of fascination for those interested in the paranormal.

The talented musicians showcased in this compilation have meticulously crafted their aural creations with the explicit intention of transporting listeners into the captivating realms of the abandoned asylums. Through their musical artistry and skillful composition, they have harnessed the power of sound to evoke a sense of wonder and immersion, inviting audiences to embark on a sensory journey into these haunting and mysterious places.

qorakitobchi's album "Ruins of Uzbekistan" is a relentless sonic journey that seems to have emerged from the very heart of Central Asia's unforgiving deserts. It resonates as if it were forged in the crucible of nomadic noise musicians, whose sonic expressions are as abrasive as the winds that sweep across the arid expanse. Enveloped by layers of dust, battered by the relentless desert gales, and occasionally swallowed by the shifting sands, qorakitobchi's compositions evoke a powerful and unyielding experience, akin to navigating a monolithic wall of sound amidst the captivating mystique of Central Asia.

qorakitobchi is the brainchild of Anvar Kalandarov, a musician hailing from Uzbekistan. Since its inception in 2012, this project has boldly ventured into uncharted sonic territories. Anvar has crafted a sonic experience that melds the harsh, unyielding essence of industrial, drone, and noise elements from Western origins with the primal and unrefined qualities of traditional Uzbek musical instruments, including the tanbur, the rubab, and the sato.

If was a British progressive rock and jazz rock band formed in 1969.[1] In the period spanning 1970–75, they released eight studio-recorded albums and undertook 17 tours of Europe, the US and Canada. The band were acclaimed by George Knemeyer in a Billboard concert review as "unquestionably the best of the so-called jazz-rock bands".[2]

The band was formed in 1969 by Dave Quincy, Dick Morrissey, and Terry Smith.[1] They were managed by Lew Futterman, who was also the band's album producer. Signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records in the UK and to Capitol Records in the US, their debut album, If (1970), entered the charts in both the States (Billboard) and the UK. The second album, If 2, was released the same year. They toured in Europe and the United States during the early 1970s, with two US tours during their first year, performing at Newport Jazz Festival, Reading Festival, and the Fillmore East[3] (10 November 1970). They also shared billing with acts such as Rory Gallagher, Rush, Kiss, The Eagles, Bo Diddley, Strawbs, REO Speedwagon, Electric Light Orchestra, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk Railroad, Rod Stewart, The Faces, Black Sabbath, Taste, Brinsley Schwarz, Atomic Rooster, Traffic, Mott the Hoople and many more. [4]

Cynic is an American progressive metal band formed in Miami, Florida in 1987 and later re-formed in Los Angeles, California in 2007, where the sole surviving member, Paul Masvidal remains to this day. Cynic incorporates elements of progressive rock, alternative, and metal.[1][2][3][4]

Their first album, Focus, was released in 1993. Cynic disbanded in 1994, but they reunited in 2006 and released their second album in 2008.[5] Traced in Air was released through French label Season of Mist,[6] followed up by an EP titled Re-Traced in 2010 and an EP titled Carbon-Based Anatomy in 2011. Their third studio album, Kindly Bent to Free Us, was released in 2014.

In December 2017, after two years of an uncertain future,[7][8] founding member Sean Reinert confirmed his split from Cynic.[9] Reinert died at the age of 48 in January 2020.[10] Longtime Cynic bass player Sean Malone died at the age of 50 eleven months later, leaving Masvidal as the only remaining original core member.[11]

Virus2020 ( فيروس ٢٠٢٠ ) creates soundscapes that transcend divisions, where you can’t identify a specific culture, where boundaries dissolve. His approach combines elements of both tradition and modernity, blending acoustic and electronic textures seamlessly and incorporating, alongside a range of analogue and digital machines, handcrafted wind instruments inspired by North African rituals.

Virus2020 is the solo project of Rami Harrabi, a Tunisian artist born in 1989 in Sousse (TN), enthralled by Arab and north-African art, instruments, traditions and rituals. Harrabi is a composer, performer, sound-designer; he self published his debut album, "I don't know," in December 2021, followed by the second album "SECT", in 2022. "KHUSHUE", the third work, is now published published by Unexplained Sounds Group.
Currently his research focuses on music instruments such as mezwed, mezwej, matbeg, and yarghoul, traditional instruments used in North African and Middle Eastern countries. They are typically played with a range of micro-intervals that allows the creation of complex melodies. These instruments have double reeds, meaning two reeds vibrate simultaneously to produce sound. This characteristic allows for playing smaller intervals than possible with a single-reed instrument, so that musicians can create complex microtonal melodies and harmonies, alongside multiphonic effects.
Under tha name "RIG", Harrabi also runs a trio project in collaboration with Ismail Lassoued and Ghassen Ben Brahim, and collaborates with Rim Harrabi for video projects.

Stephen James Buckley aka Polypores returns for his second full album on the DiN imprint following on from his 2022 debut “Hyperincandescent” (DiN71):     Multizonal Mindscramble (DiN81)

Though we’ve come to know a wide range of sounds from Polypores, it’s here on “Multizonal Mindscramble” that we get plunged into the outer reaches of the inner psyche. Flickering insectoid transmissions are laid atop slowly shifting walls of drifting oscillators, barely discernible chirps and static-encrusted filter sweeps. There are moments of undeniable melodic bliss amongst the warm, weightless transmissions though, with soaring arpeggios and covert counter-melodies emerging from the fog and coalescing into perfect harmony before fading once again into the ether. The slow intricate weaving of sounds and timbres has become a Polypores trademark, and once again the fluidity and ease with which Buckley moves between sound-worlds is evident on this new album. The organic textures morph and grow, from a syncopated glitching oscillator through to slow swells of synth and spacey, cavernous reverb. Like a languid walk through the forest, while you gradually melt through the earth and into the soil.

A perfectly balanced textural odyssey, and a stunning example of the depth and breadth of the Polypores sound “Multizonal Mindscramble” is released both as a 180g Vinyl edition and a Digipak CD with stunning artwork from Wendy Carroll that matches the music perfectly.

Review by Proghead
PROG REVIEWER

4 stars ENGLAND came a little late in the UK prog scene, coming at a bad time as punk rock was on the rise. Their one and only album, "Garden Shed" (well, at least until the 1990s with "The Last of the Jubblies" which contained leftover material) was released in 1977 on Arista Records. Despite the major label it was released on (yes, the same label that gave us the dreaded BARRY MANILOW, AIR SUPPLY and BAY CITY ROLLERS, at least the label did us a favor by having the ALAN PARSONS PROJECT, CARAVAN, and HAPPY THE MAN on their roster), the original LP is hard to find. For those who don't live in the UK (me included): the cover to "Garden Shed" is a spoof of a label to a jar of Robertson's Golden Shred Marmalade! Robertson's products are apparently not available outside of the UK (I certainly never seen any Golden Shred, Silver Shred, or any other Robertson's products sold at any supermarket in my neck of the woods), so I would never have realized the Golden Shred parody to "Garden Shed" had I not found out online. The band consisted of bassist Martin Henderson, guitarist Franc Holland, keyboardist Robert Webb, and drummer Jode Leigh. Vocal duties handled by all.

This was the last recording to feature the Mark II Mellotron (this was 1977, after all, and the Mellotron most used was the small 400 model, which was introduced in 1970, but didn't get used extensively until about or after 1972). Their keyboardist Robert Webb was said to sawed his Mark II in half to make it more portable (other keyboards he used included Hammond organ, Hohner clavinet, piano, electric piano, and Minimoog).

Musically, their influences can be rather obvious: YES, GENESIS, GENTLE GIANT, SUPERTRAMP, FRUUPP, perhaps even a little QUEEN. Like on "Midnight Madness" you hear plenty of GENESIS-like passages, with Yes-like vocal harmonies. "All Alone" is a short piano-oriented ballad that often gets compared to QUEEN, but to me reminds me of a Rick Davies-penned SUPERTRAMP ballad sung by Roger HODGSON. "Three Piece Suite" (get it?) is, as you expect, a three movement suite. The first part most resembling YES, but there are some passages with high-pitched vocals that don't seem to fit in too well. "Paraffinalea" is one of the more light-hearted numbers with more of that YES and GENTLE GIANT influences. "Yellow" is an acoustic ballad dominated by Mellotron. Here the influences seem to be not so obvious. The album then ends with "Poisoned Youth", at 16 minutes. Had this album been released a few years earlier, or punk didn't take over, this would have gotten more attention. Still, a great album.

My rating: 4 1/2 stars

                                                                Aeons - Into Eternity's Embrace

Centuries from now, humanity's destiny lies rapt in technological dominion. The age-old dreams of the spirit, long extinguished in material nothingness, arise anew from the forges of science in strange, cold shapes, seeking the freedom of infinitesimal new dimensions and the dim webs of distant stars. As our empire decays, new spiritual orders pursue a final exodus from the flesh, fleeing in self-exile, far into the black gulfs of night, craving transfiguration and an irrevocable fusion with the One: the radiant universe of the pure.
Julien Demoulin and IA join forces to present a deep-space journey of vast drone ambient and cosmic synth, opening widescreen planes of sound that sing of both transcendence and nullification.

The premise of the album—a monastic order on the cusp of transcending human existence—resonates well with the austere yet calming tone of the drone compositions. "Into Eternity's Embrace" has a remarkable capacity for escorting listeners into the vastness of the galactic emptiness, which is meant to serve as a transcendental experience. A sensation of weightlessness and detachment from worldly worries is evoked by the painstakingly created audio layers, which are rich in ethereal tones and continuous background voices. The music is meaningful and cathartic to listen to because of its capacity to be both calming and reflective. It encourages a deeper connection with the expanse of existence and the limitless potential of the human soul by inviting listeners to explore their own spiritual yearnings. "Into Eternity's Embrace" is a sonic masterpiece that resonates with the austere beauty of the monastic journey, offering solace, enlightenment, and a transcendental escape into the boundless realm of pure light.

Quatermass is the only studio album by English progressive rock band Quatermass, released in May 1970 by Harvest Records. It was produced by the Swedish producer Anders "Henkan" Henriksson [sv].[2]

Critical reception

Despite the album not performing well on the charts at the time of the release, it started to attract considerable attention in 1975, when guitarist Ritchie Blackmore covered the second track, "Black Sheep of the Family", for the debut album from Rainbow. As a consequence of the revived interest, Quatermass was re-released and sold further 20,000 copies. Since then, it has gained a cult status [3] and has received favorable retrospective reviews. Mike DeGagne has given the album a rating of four stars out of five on AllMusic. He has called Quatermass "a must-have for prog rock enthusiasts, especially lovers of the keyboard-dominated style which flourished in the early '70s".[1]

From the kitchen of the original King Crimson R&D fraKctal units & Stick Men. Defying logistics to grab four days together, the immersive session included repertoire rehearsal; as well as recording semi-prepared pieces and several full improvisations. The band's chemistry has deep roots and connections are made quickly so large slabs of music appear unedited.  Purchase this release on Bandcamp.

These two hours of recordings are the outcome.
Well...only part of it.

Pat Mastelotto - Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, and so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 25 years with King Crimson and Stick Men.

Markus Reuter is a composer, guitarist, and producer. He began his musical journey as a composer before delving into Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft, mastering the Chapman Stick, and eventually transitioning to the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released numerous solo albums and has collaborated extensively with various musicians. He holds a prominent position in the experimental band Anchor and Burden and forms the duo Tuner with Pat. Additionally, he was a member of Europa String Choir and has worked alongside notable artists such as Gary Husband, Robert Rich, J. Peter Schwalm, Mark Wingfield, and many others. Reuter's versatility is evident through his involvement in Devin Townsend's touring band. Notably, he also performs in power trios including Stick Men with Pat and Tony Levin, TRUCE with Asaf Sirkis and Fabio Trentini, and Markus Reuter/Tim Motzer/Kenny Grohowski.

Trey Gunn, the extraordinary Warr guitarist and musician, has left an indelible mark on the world of progressive and experimental music. Renowned for his virtuosic talent, he has graced the stages and studios with legendary acts such as King Crimson, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, Happy Rhodes, Puscifer, Tool and John Paul Jones, contributing his unique blend of mesmerizing and innovative playing. As the founder of the esteemed 7D Media record label, Gunn continues to be a guiding force in curating exceptional musical experiences. Trey Gunn’s visionary artistry and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of sound make him a true luminary in the realm of progressive music.

PROG REVIEWER

4 stars First album by this rather late Krautrock band was undoubtedly their very best one. Actually the only point of criticism one could quote is the fact that it might have sounded already a bit dated in its year of release. Being much in the vein of early Tull, Iron Butterfly, Cream or The Doors the tracks presented here are a wonderful demonstration of this early Art Rock or Proto-Prog style. The title song is the one reminding the most to Tull with a soaring flute and heavy organ. It's a very powerful and grooving one with a sort of psychedelic blues guitar play that's bringing Cream back to mind. "Seasons Of Life" is even in a stronger psychedelic vein, kinda The Doors meet Cream or Iron Butterfly, very groovin' stuff as well. This record doesn't let your foot stand still only for one second. Though it might be not considered as that much progressive for the year of 1974 "Desert Places" was nevertheless a brilliant album in organ driven Art Rock typical for beginning seventies.

Probably not essential for any prog collector in general, but highly recommended for fans of jammin' and groovin' early 70s psychedelic blues rock!

"Unclear Frequencies", the new Yousef Kawar album released by Reverse Alignment, unveils a mesmerizing and introspective side of Kawar's musical repertoire. With a profound sense of meditation and a touch of enigmatic allure, this collection of eight tracks captivates listener, guiding the attention towards the intricate depths of psyche. Each composition serves as a portal, drawing us into a mesmerizing sonic landscape where hidden mysteries beckon and unanswered questions linger. In this ethereal sonic tapestry without a center of attraction, Yousef Kawar expertly manipulates the elements of sound, creating an atmosphere that is both haunting and enchanting. The music lingers in the air, delicately weaving its way into our thoughts, evoking a sense of pulverized introspection. It invites us to embrace the enigma and the unknown, to delve into those small psychic dark areas we often overlook.

Yousef Kawar is an internationally renowned artist, known for his multifaceted talents as a Musician, Videographer, and Audiovisual Artist. With a string of accolades under his belt, including numerous videography and soundtrack awards, Yousef has solidified his position as a visionary in the industry. Throughout his career, Yousef has released seven music albums, each meticulously composed, produced, and mixed by his own hand. His exceptional talent has caught the attention of esteemed international music producers and artists, leading to his inclusion in record label releases. Working from his studio, Yousef actively engages in creating captivating audiovisual installations and collaborating on music and art projects in New York City (where he currently lives), the United States, Europe, and across the globe. Yousef's artistic endeavors have garnered recognition and acclaim from professionals in various fields. Notably, CNN's Johnny Colt, the international Italian/English book "Vite In Quarantena," featuring iconic figures such as Sadhguru, Orlan, and Stelarc, as well as Hyperallergic magazine, AirVuz, and Viewing NYC video channels, have all acknowledged his exceptional work. Moreover, Yousef has had the privilege of working and collaborating with renowned stars such as Alex Skolnick, Steve Lukather, Mateus Asato, Steve Vai, and many others, further attesting to his artistic prowess.
