FreeForm Radio thanks Ian Boddy for a promo copy of this release.

Norwegian ambient guitarist Erik Wøllo has become a familiar name to followers of the DiN label as he has previously collaborated with label boss Ian Boddy on three studio albums as well as a couple of releases with Bernhard Wöstheinrich. His other live release with Boddy was from their only concert together so far, “EC12” (DiNDDL16), from their performance at the Electronic Circus in Germany in 2012. That is, until April 2024, when the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool invited Wøllo to perform alongside Boddy at what would be his UK debut.

During the evening at the Capstone each musician played solo sets and then combined on stage to play an electrifying hour long performance mining tracks from their previous two albums “Meridian” (DiN54) and “Revolve” (DiN73). It is this joint concert that forms their new release, “Transmissions” (DiN92). Taking the original pieces as their starting point the duo played reworked and extended versions of these tracks with Wøllo getting the chance to play some wonderful guitar solos that take the music to a whole new level. Meanwhile Boddy used his Eurorack modular system to sculpt and mould the rhythmic sequencers and drums around Erik’s playing, as well as adding his distinctive French Connection Ondes style voicings. The main set was a continuous sonic journey through mystical soundscapes and rhythmic slices of Berlin School sequencing. The final encore track was a rendition of the track “Apogee” from the duos 2022 album “Revolve” (DiN73) with Wøllo playing a blistering guitar solo over Boddy’s heavy, sequenced grooves.

This is a real treat for DiN aficionados and a perfect example of how two experienced musicians can take existing material and take it to new emotional heights in a live setting.

FreeForm Radio thanks Alex for a complimentary copy of this release.

Extremely happy to share the latest interpretation of quiet details idea from a leading protagonist of widescreen dystopian electronica, Martin Jenkins, here as Pye Corner Audio.

Bandcamp link/code and private streaming link below, and please find the press release with the full details attached. Full release 14th May 2025.

From his first release, the Pye Corner Audio project stamped itself as a firm favourite - with releases on Further Records, Ghost Box, Sonic Cathedral, Boomkat Editions, Lapsus and many others - the perfect meeting of cinematic synth melodics, dusky atmospherics and drum machine workouts, carved out a niche all of its own.

Lake Deep Memory is Pye Corner Audio at its most beguiling and polychromatic - inspired by a trip to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala where he played a festival in 2024, you can feel the awe of the volcanic landscape in the vastness and ethereal soundscapes across the album.

It’s a place that’s spiritually important to the local people, and you can feel how some of this influence made its way into the music - there’s an intangible, almost ritualistic, sensation created by the organic nature of the instrumentation - light shifts to dark, pressure gives way to weightlessness.

The Pye Corner Audio trademark synth-mastery is fully present, combined with field recordings he took while experiencing this most sacred of places.
Together, they truly create a universe of powerful and emotive vistas - a beautiful place that has the potential to elicit endless imagery in the listeners’ mind’s-eye.

As he says:

I’ve always been inspired by the noises and submerged sounds that a lot of artists try to eradicate, such as noise, hums and hiss.
Those are the quiet details that I bring to the foreground.

From soaring passages of wondrous harmonic density, to highly textural and psychedelic movements - this is a completely immersive and mesmerising journey through metaphysical dreams - a stunning journey from a brilliantly talented and expressive artist.

Huge thanks to Martin for being part of the series.

The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - originating from a photo from Martin (taken at Lake Atitlan) which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.

As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom six-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.

The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, created by the artist and representing the music in its purest form.

Progressive Art Rock luminaries The Pineapple Thief return with new album ‘It Leads To This’ out February 9th on Kscope.

The Pineapple Thief revel in opposing forces. Muscle and fragility. Chaos and precision. Distorted introspection and warm, dreamlike expanse. Conceived in 1999 by Bruce Soord, the progressive quartet underwent a rebirth in 2017 with the arrival of Gavin Harrison (King Crimson, Porcupine Tree) on drums. Completed by bassist Jon Sykes and keyboardist Steve Kitch, they’ve honed a lean yet lush, quietly timeless sound that soars on It Leads To This.

The Pineapple Thief had the following to say regarding the new single:

“We worked on these new songs for nearly 3 years. It was the most intense time I can remember within The Pineapple Thief. Personally I was being pushed well beyond my known limits, which is great from an artistic perspective but also very very challenging from a personal perspective.

Bruce continues:

Conceptually ‘It Leads To This’ continues my desire to observe and (try to) make sense of life and the world around me. It’s all there in the lyrics.

The initial concept for the songs came together very quickly but the final lyrical and musical elements took a huge amount of work to piece together between the four of us, at least to a point where we were all satisfied.  After so long in the business, being ‘satisfied’ is constantly being pushed further, constantly redefined. That’s the thing, we just kept pushing…”

To coincide with their formidable return, the band reveal a beautifully shot, compelling video for the first chapter of ‘It Leads To This’ in the form of ‘The Frost’. The video for the new single shot by Jeremy George brings the vibrant landscape of Iceland to life in the post-apocalyptic world pictured on the cover.

It all feeds into It Leads To This. Comprising eight fat-free epics – all about five minutes long, mixing rock urgency with delicate atmospherics, pensive keys and captivating melodies – it finds Soord looking back and fearing for the world his children will inherit. His lyrics also drew from literature: accounts of Ancient Rome, John Williams’ classic Stoner and epistolary Augustus. All conveyed through Soord’s fragile yet penetrative tenor, nodding to storytellers like Nick Drake, Thom Yorke and Katatonia’s Jonas Renkse.

In a way, that’s The Pineapple Thief all over. Idiosyncratic but relatable. Devastating and life-affirming, in the same breath. Not married to a single genre, just melody served by tones and textures. Music that only the four of them could make.

It Leads To This will be available in a multitude of formats that are as follows:

Limited Edition Deluxe 4 Disc set featuring:
DISC 1: CD Album
DISC 2: Bonus CD ‘Y Aqui Estamos’ – Alternate Versions
DISC 3: Blu-ray – It Leads To This + bonus album “Y Aqui Estamos” (reworkings of album session recordings): Dolby Atmos-DTS-HD MA 5.1-24/48 PCM Stereo mixes created by Bruce Soord

The next release in the quiet details series has been created by two of the most well-respected artists currently in modern ambient and experimental music, Ian Hawgood and James Murray, here as Slow Reels.Ian is one of the people behind the legendary label Home Normal, plus has a vast discography of releases under his own name and in collaborations. A masterful exponent of magnetic tape, synthesisers and electro-acoustics - Ian is loved across the musical world for his deeply thoughtful production and curation.James runs the wonderful Slowcraft label, another fantastic outlet for some of the best ambient-leaning music around. His own productions are also of the highest calibre, exploring analogue and digital techniques to breath-taking effect. Also working on film scores and more, James is an artist with many talents.Together they complement each other perfectly, as shown by the previous two Slow Reels releases - Farewell Islands (Morr Music) and Sustain (Fluid Audio). This is continued in stunning fashion here, they have made something quite wonderful with their latest album, Everyday Exotic.Bringing all their melodic and textural sensibilities, they have created an album that’s full of beautiful and deeply moving moments, always evolving yet giving you enough time to fully immerse yourself in the harmonic wonder and the vast open spaces only artists of their skill and experience can achieve.Piano, electro-acoustics and field recordings meet incredibly creative synth-work and granular processing, creating a peerless marriage of layers and textures -  you can feel the respect and affection these artists have for each other coming through every element - some collaborations just work and this is easily one of my most loved. Each track moves gently and seamlessly into the next, the pacing and range of emotions are again a sign of musicians with full command of not only their tools, but also the human feeling behind what they are aiming to express. To me, this is as close to sonic bliss as you can get, it’s my great honour to share it with you.The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - this time originating from a picture of James’ beautiful cockatiel friend Coco, which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.

As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom 6-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.The CD also has a special long-form continuous mix of the album, representing the music in its purest form.   Find it here on Bandcamp.

Our thanks to Alex at quiet details with providing us with a copy of this release to share with our listeners.

Among the musicians I have appreciated the most in recent years, a special place is undoubtedly reserved for Lars Bröndum and David Lee Myers. From 2015 onwards, I had the pleasure of playing their songs on the radio transmission The Recognition Test frequently, and inviting them to participate in numerous compilations published by the Unexplained Sounds network. Over time, I realized that, albeit in different ways and forms, their music could integrate and complement that of my Sonologyst project. This led me to the idea of inviting them to collectively produce tracks. From our exchanges of samples, audio experiments, music segments, a long piece of over 20 minutes emerged, which I believe effectively encapsulates how our musical sensibilities complemented each other. We then added individually composed tracks, resulting in this album, "Unus Et Trinus," in which the listeners can hear the music of each of the three participants separately but also the collective piece. This allows them to get an "almost real-time" idea of how three different sonic worlds can create a synthesis.

David Lee Myers, hailing from New York City, is an accomplished sound and visual artist. His journey in sound manipulation began in 1980, utilizing electronic circuitry of his own design for sound production, both under his name and as Arcane Device. Since 1987, he has pioneered "Feedback Music," a distinctive approach that predates the "no-input mixer" trend by several years. In this genre, audio processors feed off their own outputs and those of other processors via custom-built matrix mixers, enabling these devices to create their unique sonic narratives. More recently, Myers has incorporated modified video circuits to produce complementary visual presentations during his performances. He has an extensive discography, with over thirty recordings released by prominent labels such as Generator, Recommended, Line, Silent, Pogus, RRRecords, Staalplaat, Monochrome Vision, and more. Notably, he has collaborated with electronic music pioneer Tod Dockstader, as well as artists like Gen Ken Montgomery, Thomas Dimuzio, Ellen Band, guitarist Marco Oppedisano, and Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana).

Sonologyst is the brainchild of Italian producer Raffaele Pezzella, known for his meticulous exploration of the intersection between music and contemporary mythologies. Sonologyst's sonic landscape spans from Fortean documentary-style soundscapes to the creation of post-industrial auditory experiences. He fuses various technologies, including analog machines, software, and, more recently, AI, drawing inspiration from the early electronic music pioneers. Since 2014, Pezzella has curated Unexplained Sounds, a 'Global Network of Aural Disorientation.' Under this umbrella, Unexplained Sounds Group was founded in 2015, now encompassing subsidiary labels like Eighth Tower Records, ZeroK, and Reverse Alignment. Pezzella is also a publisher of books and hosts a streaming radio program titled 'The Recognition Test.' Sonologyst's works have been published by various labels, including Cold Spring Records, Unexplained Sounds Group, Eighth Tower Records, Gravity's Rainbow Tapes, and Attenuation Circuit.

Lars Bröndum, PhD, is a versatile artist, serving as a composer, live electronics performer, theorist, and guitarist. His compositions have graced international stages in countries such as Sweden, Japan, Germany, Scotland, Lithuania, Russia, Latvia, England, USA, Spain, and Mexico. They have also found their way onto the airwaves, being broadcast on radio and webradio in Germany, England, Italy, Sweden, and the USA. Lars Bröndum's music is a captivating exploration of the interplay between acoustic and electronic instruments, residing on the boundary between structured compositions and spontaneous improvisation. His works are characterized by cyclic processes, irregular ostinatos, fragmented gestures, and microtonal clusters. Bröndum is actively involved in the electroacoustic music scene, notably at EMS (Electroacoustic Music in Sweden), and he has held positions on the boards of Fylkingen (a society for new music and intermedia art), SEAMS (Society of Electroacoustic Music in Sweden), and VEMS (Composers at EMS) from 2007 to 2008. He has also contributed as a board member to the Swedish Section of ICEM (International Confederation for Electronic Music). Bröndum often composes for and collaborates with ensembles such as ReSurge, ExSurge, AGAIG, and Spiral Cycle. He is a key figure in projects like the "Ensemble SFW" and maintains a duo partnership with Sten-Olof Hellstrom. His dedication to the craft has earned him composer grants from Konstnärsnämnden (Swedish Art Council), STIM (Swedish Performing Rights Society), and accolades from FST (Swedish Composer's Society). Moreover, Lars Bröndum is the founder of the independent record label Antennae Media.

The View From Vega

Benge

Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, has been exploring the sonic possibilities of electronic instruments since he was a young boy, in the1970s. After graduating from art school in 1990 he set up his own music studio and started recording his unique blend of experimental electronica, culminating in his debut album "Electro-Orgoustic Music" and the formation of Expanding Records in 1995. Since then he has released dozens of albums as Benge, as well as collaborating with various luminaries from the electronic music world on many other album projects. He has formed several notable and ongoing bands such as John Foxx & The Maths, Wrangler (with Stephen Mallinder / Cabaret Voltaire and Phil Winter / Tunng), Fader (with Neil Arthur / Blancmange), and his most recent project Creep Show (Wrangler + John Grant). Benge's creative output now centres around his Memetune Studio Complex, located in one of the UKs remotest moorland locations, writing and producing his various music projects as well as making video art and TV programmes about his activities.

“The View From Vega”, his debut solo album on the DiN imprint, is primarily an ambient suite of tracks inspired by the space-music typically produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It uses a selection of vintage synthesisers, sequencers and FX units to provide a fertile sonic landscape to explore. The idea was to use simple sequences (using both analogue and digital units), sustained synthesiser pads and electronic piano improvisations, alongside various ancient delay, flange and reverb units. The beautiful, warm quality of the tones that exude from such instruments are very evident on the six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic, melodic soundscapes.

An unashamedly vintage sounding album in all its analogue glory, “The View From Vega” is released both as a 180g Vinyl edition and a Digipak CD with stunning artwork from Wendy Carroll that matches the music perfectly.

We'll end tonight's shows with a track from this new release from Sonologyst.

The new Sonologyst "sonic documentary" delves into the secretive realm of shortwave transmissions; a chronicle of clandestine shortwave transmissions culled from a span of nearly four decades (1982-2021). These mysterious transmissions - repetitive voices, signals, sound pulses, short pieces of music - were collated and edited to compose the tracks of the main album.

Immersed in an isolating fog of dark ambient, deep drone music and cinematic sound art, it provides an auditory exploration of the ongoing Cold War. Originating from covert radio stations engaged in military and espionage endeavours, the tracks unveil a hidden sonic landscape of strategic communication.

The second disc, in its extensive presentation, provides a deeper immersion into these enigmatic broadcasts. Each recording remains unaltered, accompanied only by a ghostly drone. It offers an unfiltered glimpse into the world of clandestine communication, where words are transmitted beneath the radar and in the shadowy confines of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Vital Weekly (excerpt review)

Raffaele Pezzella's musical project Sonologyst doesn't need much introduction. I reviewed several of his works and liked it a lot. You can find an indication of the source material in the title, shortwave sounds, and, in particular, from what is called number stations. This takes us back to the days of the Cold War when secret services worldwide used radio transmissions to communicate with agents in the field—voices reading groups of numbers, Morse codes or otherwise random bleeps and hard to intercept and block. The Cold War may have ended, but the information notes that in recent years, Chinese, Korean and Indian Numbers Stations have been picked up, and I assume these are at the core of the music here and not the 4CD set released by Irdial in the 1990s. It would make a damn good book to describe the use of radio (waves) as a musical instrument and the history thereof, as I believe that, next to the mouth, the radio is one of easiest accessible instruments available for any would-be musicians (if you already wrote such a book, then let me know). That is not to say that it's easy to play great music based on radio waves, but Sonologyst is a true master in crafting deep, dark, and highly ambient music with that ghostly atmosphere lingering in the background. As much as Number Stations are mysterious, so is this music. Oddly enough, maybe, there are six tracks on the first CD, somewhere between five and fifteen minutes, and the oddity is that these are more minimal than the forty-two-minute piece on the second CD. Each of these six stays in stasis and move within the given parameters. The long one, 'Shortwaves', is a piece that moves between many stations, picking up spoken word, classical music, pop music and whatever else along the way, against a backdrop of drones. It shows that one can do many things with radio waves, which is why I'm still fascinated by it. (FdW)

This Is Darkness
Well, this is very cool – an album of dark ambient / deep drone, inspired by and using edited shortwave radio broadcasts from the mysterious ‘number stations’ that during the cold war (and beyond) transmitted coded messages for agents deep undercover in enemy nations. The resulting album is a collection of haunting and otherworldly tracks unlike anything I’ve heard in a long time. As a bonus, Sonologyst has included a 7th track that is less filtered – it contrasts beautifully with the six expertly crafted tracks that came before it, and provides an even deeper experience of these ghostly broadcasts. Highly recommended!

“Revolve” is the fourth collaborative project between DiN label boss Ian Boddy and the acclaimed Norwegian composer and guitarist Erik Wøllo. Their previous two studio albums “Frontiers” (DiN39) and “Meridian” (DiN54) were both very well received. They also played live together at the Electronic Circus Festival V and released this performance as the digital album “EC12” (DiNDDL16).

As with their other work together “Revolve” is a continuous sonic journey, with the tracks joined together by slices of sonic ambience and field recordings. Whereas their previous two albums seemed to inhabit the frozen landscapes of the North, this time the duo seem to be exploring warmer climes. The combination of Boddy’s Moog and modular sequencing with Wøllo’s ostinato guitar patterns creates sections that ebb and flow structurally with a beguiling sense of space and freedom. Beautifully ethereal textures give way to pulsing rhythmic sequencers underpinned by solid bass lines and shimmering percussion lines, as evidenced most succinctly on the title track. Over these structures Wøllo’s guitar motifs soar and glide, especially when he uses the EBow to produce a haunting, legato tone colour. The final track “Adiona” sees Boddy joining Wøllo by playing his Ondes Martenot style French Connection keyboard for a stunning duet to close the album.

Certainly cinematic, “Revolve” is a stunning musical travelogue that cries out to be listened to as a whole album and shows the mastery both these composers have in their craft.

Harmonium was the eponymous debut album by Québécois band Harmonium released in 1974. It was their most folk driven album, and features the song that made them famous "Pour un instant". It features nowhere near as exotic instrumentation as on their later albums, mostly sticking to simple guitar and bass arrangements, with occurrences of drums on a few songs.

                                                         Hours Lost

In September of 1961, an event happened that would become one of the most widely publicized alien abduction cases in history. After having an encounter with a bright light in the sky that appeared to follow them on their late drive home (Portsmouth, New Hampshire, US), Betty and Barney Hill pulled over and got out of the car to investigate. The light turned out to be a metallic object as big as a jet and it hovered above them. Gray beings with large eyes could be seen in the windows. Fleeing the scene, they both heard a series of buzzing sounds and lost consciousness. Upon a second series of sounds they found themselves arriving home much later with no recollection of what had happened after their encounter. Only through months of sessions through hypnosis were they able to come to understand what had happened during that missing time.
This album is inspired by these events and what happened during those hours lost.

This Is Darkness
The latest release from the ever cool Zero K label is inspired by a case of alien abduction in 1961 and the idea of “missing time” that alien abductees experience. This is an impressive album of dark ambient / drone music, with skillfully blended glitch and post-industrial soundscapes. It’s eerie, otherworldly stuff, and it does a wonderful job of creating an unsettling and alien mood. I’ve had this on continuous play since I first heard it, and I will be listening to this for a long time to come. Very highly recommended!
