Review of the Steve Hackett Album ‘The Circus and the Nightwhale’

Midway through Steve Hackett’s dazzling new album, “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” the legendary ex-Genesis guitarist delivers a three-part musical suite that perfectly demonstrates that, at 74, he is still at the top of his game, challenging himself and his fans by breaking new ground.

The trilogy opens with, “Found and Lost,” a spare classical-guitar piece that evolves into a cabaret-style jazz ballad about fleeting first love. The track would have fit nicely on any 1950s-era Blue Note standards album, replete with muffled trumpet strains and a smoldering vocal from Hackett that would give Mel “The Velvet Fog” Torme a run for his money. This shotgun marriage of nylon-string guitar and smoky film noir ambience leads directly to a shimmering 12-string/piano-driven piece, “Enter the Ring,” overlaid with lush vocal harmonies that call to mind the Genesis classic, “Entangled” (co-written by Hackett and Tony Banks in the mid-1970s). From here, the track builds in intensity to become a prog-rock workout, featuring shifting time signatures and dirty hummed-through flute lines that echo Ian Anderson. And if that isn’t sufficiently wide ranging, this rocky break gives way to a lysergic mashup of quirky circus themes and Brahmsian orchestral-rock that sets up the heaviest tune on the album, “Get Me Out,” helmed by Hackett’s scorching sustain-on-steroids electric fretwork.

The result is an astonishing tour-de-force that takes your breath away. What is most remarkable, however, is not just how well Hackett merges these disparate genres, but the way each piece leads seamlessly to the next, without sounding forced or contrived.
This quality of Hackett’s music — the musical derring-do and ease with which he stitches together contrasting musical styles — is what sets him apart. It’s also what makes his new album as strong as anything Hackett has produced over the past 55 years, inside and outside of his former main musical squeeze, Genesis.

Lyrically, “The Circus and the Nightwhale” is a rite-of-passage concept album built around the surrealistic adventures of a young character named Travla (get it?) that Hackett acknowledges is semi-autobiographical. On the surface, the premise might sound familiar; the record comes 50 years after the release of the mother of all prog-rock concept albums, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” the 1974 Genesis double album that many fans consider the band’s finest studio effort (with Hackett launching a “Genesis Revisited” tour later this year that will feature highlights from the landmark record, as well as selections from his solo career).

But musically, the 13 tracks on the “The Circus and the Nightwhale” are more eclectic than anything Hackett and his Genesis mates ever produced back in the day. The album combines quiet ballads, acoustic etudes, jazz fusion, blues, high-energy prog, symphonic and theatrical rock, and even world-beat music in a mix that is cinematic in sweep and scope (exemplifying what Hackett calls “films for the ear”).

The album, which arrives nearly more than two years after Hackett’s last release, “Surrender of Silence,” features what has become his main touring band: Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Craig Blundell (drums), Amanda Lehmann on vocals and John Hackett (Steve’s brother) on flute. A few guesting musicians also lend a hand (or two): Nick D’Virgilio and Hugo Degenhardt on drums, engineer Benedict Fenner on keyboards and Malik Mansurov on Middle Eastern tar, a long-necked sitar-like lute native to the Middle East. But the engine that drives this train, as ever, is Hackett, whose compositional vision is matched by his stellar work on electric and acoustic guitars, 12-string, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, bass and lead vocals.

The album opens with the propulsive “People of The Smoke,” a sweeping cinematic mini epic that conjures up the post-war London of Hackett’s childhood. Vintage 1950s-era radio station cut-ins, a baby’s cries, a woman’s voice (asking: “Are you sitting comfortably?”) and the sounds of a steam-train engine gaining speed introduce the listener to the musical journey that follows. Hackett’s vocals here and elsewhere are strong and more confident than ever. While more limited in range than, say, Sylvan’s (who can go from a velvety baritone to sky-scaping falsetto in a flash), Hackett’s vocal style is theatrical, affecting and well-suited to the music and narrative throughout the album.

Next up is “These Passing Clouds,” a rocky 90-second instrumental propelled by Hackett’s emotive electric guitar lines. It sets up “Taking You Down,” a darkly sardonic story-song about an unscrupulous childhood friend that showcases a haunting vocal from Sylvan and a wild wailing sax solo from Townsend.

The three-song triptych — “Found and Lost/Enter the Ring/Get Me Out” — follows, before we’re treated to the most Genesis-like track on the album, “Ghost Moon and Living Love,” a lovely ballad featuring a celestial-choir intro delivered by Amanda Lehman. The opening melody, which Hackett says came to him in a fever dream, is a heavenly mini-oratorio that would fit neatly alongside Handel’s “Messiah.” It’s a heady introduction the mid-tempo rocker to come.

It’s followed by “Circo Inferno,” a fiery prog-metal rocker that opens with a frenzied melody from Mansurov plucked on Middle Eastern tar that builds steadily into a wild wall of sound that blows in like a musical scirocco. Two brief but intense instrumentals are next — “Breakout,” carried along by a relentlessly propulsive drum line from — and “All at Sea,” featuring a Hackett solo guitar line that approximates whale calls.

These short interludes set up another three-song cycle that closes out the album. The first in the series, “Into the Nightwhale,” explores the challenges of confronting personal demons and the transformational power of love. The song, which is the proggiest on the album, builds to a noisy climax that ultimately gives way to a lush Yes-like ambient-nature soundscape that echoes the opening strains of “Close to the Edge,” as Hackett intones: “Visions of love beyond word…I’ll be there when the darkness surrounds you.”

It’s followed by “Wherever You Are,” an unabashedly romantic love song that ranks among Hackett’s finest works. But it also features lyrics that read like a declaration of musical purpose for the legendary guitarist: “What are we living for, why do we strive? Can a song travel to the ends of the Earth?” Finally, Hackett ends the album with the gorgeous “White Dove,” another solo classical guitar piece that plays like a musical sequel to his Bach-like etude, “Horizons,” from the 1972 Genesis classic “Foxtrot.”

In interviews, Hackett has made no secret of the autobiographical nature of album — his 30th as a solo artist and easily one of his top five (in this writer’s opinion). Consequently, it seems only fitting to give him the final word here:
“I love this album. It says the things I’ve been wanting to say for a very long time,” he says, adding: “It’s a lovely journey that starts dirty, scratchy and smoky and becomes heavenly and divine. How can you resist it?”

Recorded between Hackett’s “Genesis Revisited” tours in 2022 and 2023 at Siren studio in the U.K. – with guest parts coming in from Sweden, Austria, the U.S., Azerbaijan and Denmark — the new album is available in several different formats. Among them: A limited-edition CD/Blu-ray media book (including 5.1 surround sound and 24-bit high resolution stereo mixes), standard CD jewel case, gatefold 180g vinyl LP and as digital album.

As with the previous seven DiN samplers label boss Ian Boddy has mixed and cross-faded the 18 tracks into a continuous ambient mix that not only showcases the albums featured on the release but presents an exciting and varied title in its own right. It also highlights the varied and intriguing music that the DiN label offers on its releases from deep analogue synth grooves through vibrantly melodic instrumentals to powerful, epic ambient atmospheres. An intoxicating mix of the old and new beautifully presented in a slimline cardboard wallet with an extra flap which just adds to the value and collectibility of this release.

With a total release catalogue now of 118 titles the DiN label is continuing to innovate and evolve as it heads toward 2024 when it will celebrate 25 years of releasing quality instrumental electronic and ambient synth music.

Liminal spaces refer to transitional or in-between areas that exist on the threshold between two distinct states or environments. These spaces are characterized by ambiguity, uncertainty, and a sense of being neither here nor there. Liminality can be experienced physically, such as in doorways, corridors, or airports, as well as psychologically, in moments of transition or transformation. The concept of liminality was originally developed by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep and later expanded upon by anthropologist Victor Turner. They used it to describe the middle stage of a rite of passage, where individuals are neither fully part of their old identity nor fully integrated into their new identity. However, the concept of liminality has since been applied more broadly to various aspects of human experience, including physical spaces. Liminal spaces often evoke a sense of unease or strangeness in people. This feeling can be attributed to the psychological phenomenon known as the uncanny. The uncanny refers to something that is familiar yet strange, ordinary yet unsettling. It is a state of cognitive dissonance that arises when we encounter something that challenges our expectations or blurs the boundaries between the known and the unknown. In liminal spaces, the uncanny can manifest in different ways. The ambiguity of these spaces can create a sense of disorientation and make us question our perceptions. The absence of clear markers or familiar cues can lead to a feeling of being lost or disconnected. Additionally, the transitory nature of liminal spaces can evoke a sense of anticipation or suspense, as we await what lies ahead or reflect on what we have left behind.
Vyormouth music is a clear manifestation of music as representation of liminal spaces, both physical as well as psychological. Listening to the long tracks of the album “Liminal Spaces” we experience a state of mental disorientation in which our brain not only perceives the ambiguity of slow transitions and potential eerie apparitions, but also reflects about our own identity as part of an uncertain reality. ZeroK is proud to present the mysterious and unsettling debut album of Vyormouth.

More (released in the United States as Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from the film More) is the first soundtrack album and third studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd. It was released on 13 June 1969 in the United Kingdom by EMI Columbia and on 9 August 1969 in the United States by Tower Records.[2] It was the band's first album without any involvement from former band leader Syd Barrett, and is a soundtrack for the 1969 film of the same name, which was primarily filmed on location on Ibiza and was the directorial debut of Barbet Schroeder.
Unlike its predecessors The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) and A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), More received mixed reviews from critics.
More is a psychedelic rock[3] soundtrack album which contains some acoustic folk ballads, a genre that appeared sparsely on Pink Floyd's later works. It also contains some of the band's "heaviest" recordings, such as "The Nile Song" and "Ibiza Bar",[4][5] as well as several instrumental tracks, featuring their experimental and avant-garde approach.
This is Pink Floyd's first full album without founding member Syd Barrett, who was ousted from the group in 1968 during the recording of A Saucerful of Secrets. It is one of only three Pink Floyd albums to feature David Gilmour as the sole lead vocalist, the others being 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason and 2014's The Endless River, and it is also the first album to be produced by Pink Floyd without assistance from Norman Smith. More was recorded at Pye Studios, Bryanston Street, London W1 and engineered by Brian Humphries.[6] It is the only album in the band's discography not to have a lead vocal from Roger Waters during his tenure in the band (1964–1985).
Two songs can be heard in the film which were not included on the album: "Seabirds"[7] and "Hollywood". Those songs, as well as two other songs from those sessions,"Theme (Beat Version)" and "More Blues (Alternative Version)", were released in 2016 in the box set, The Early Years 1965–1972. The set in which these tracks appear, 1969: Dramatis/ation was made available as a standalone release in 2017. "Seabirds" is not the track heard in the film, but a reworking of "Quicksilver".

iNDEX06 is the sixth DiN compilation album and includes two tracks each from the titles DiN51 - 59. The artists on show this time are Ian Boddy, Node, ARC, Bluetech, d’Voxx and collaborations between Parallel Worlds & Dave Bessell, Ian Boddy & Erik Wøllo and Markus Reuter & Ian Boddy.

As with the previous five DiN samplers DiN label boss Ian Boddy has mixed and cross-faded the 18 tracks into a continuous ambient mix that not only showcases the albums featured on the release but presents an exciting and varied title in its own right. It also highlights the varied and intriguing music that the DiN label offers on its releases from deep analogue synth grooves through vibrantly melodic instrumentals to powerful, epic ambient atmospheres. An intoxicating mix of the old and new beautifully presented in a slimline cardboard wallet with an extra flap which just adds to the value and collectibility of this release.

Furthermore this compilation falls in the same year that the DiN label is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This is no small feat for a niche independent label and DiN is finally getting some of the recognition it so justly deserves. DiN60 will be included as the subscribers free CD in the July issue of the well respected magazine Electronic Sound and is also pencilled in to be featured on the Bandcamp main web page in the same month.

 Aniana was a student of mine at Kodiak High School many years ago - her debut solo release is a superb example of her singing and songwriting abilities - and her backup band is kickass!
From her Kickstarter page:

This album has been a long time coming. I’ve been working for so many years on many different projects, pouring every drop of my passion for singing and performance into each one.
My musical career first bloomed over a decade ago in Phoenix, Arizona where I sang harmonies in The Mighty 602 Band, a reggae backing band that backed legends such as H.R. (of Bad Brains), Ras Michael, and Danny Clark of The Meditations. I also worked in the 9-piece hip-hop band Antedote, singing smooth melodies over jazz-infused beats. After moving to Portland seven years ago, you may have seen me perform with bands such as Philly's Phunkestra, Ben Darwish’s Commotion, Marv Ellis, Funk N' Roses, and Yak Attack. I've fallen in love with each style of music I’ve performed - reggae, hip-hop, rock, funk, soul, folk and I've discovered new things about my voice and performance style each time.
The songs on the album move through the chapters of my life. With each chapter that I write about, the style reflects true to the kind of music that I was performing at the time. Each genre brings out memories and conjures feelings about different periods of my life. Music has always been a pulse - a living part of my soul that has carried me through the peaks and valleys of my journey.
I’ve waited so patiently for this time to come. My musical career has taken me on an amazing journey of performances.

  DiN56 | Parallel Worlds & Dave Bessell | Dystopia                




The names of both Parallel Worlds and Dave Bessell should be very familiar by now to followers of the DiN ambient electronica label. Bakis Sirros (aka Parallel Worlds) has two solo albums, Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26), Shade (DiN32) as well as collaborations with DiN label boss Ian Boddy on Exit Strategy (DiN37) and most recently World Adapter (DiN48) with Self Oscillate (Ingo Zobel). Bessell on the other hand has a single solo album Black Horses Of The Sun (DiN47) as well as his contributions to the two synth supergroup Node releases (Node 2 (DiN44) & Node Live (DiN55)). Of course the duo have already collaborated before on their 2012 album, “Morphogenic” (DiN41) and “Dystopia” sees these two musicians continue their sonic dialogue.
 
Track titles such as “Cipher”, “Mutagen” and “Devoid” as well as the album title leaves one in no doubt that you are entering a dark and foreboding sound world. Indeed Bessell quotes the infamous novel “Neuromancer” by William Gibson as a major influence. Bakis Sirros as ever weaves his intricate modular rhythms that seem to squirm and writhe underneath vast slabs of analogue chords that rise and fall like cities. Indeed the album is very dynamic with complex, almost classical arrangements that constantly shift under ones feet. Amongst this Bessell introduces some fleeting guitar work as well as his adventurous analogue physical modelling sound design. Seeming to inhabit a netherworld between dark electronica and progressive synth these two musicians have once again created an album that just doesn’t sound like anyone else out there. Join them for a unique sonic adventure.

DiN10 | 2001 

The UK magazine The Wire showcased the DiN sampler in its June 2001 issue. All subscribers worldwide (about 7000 readers) received a free copy of this disc in their June issue. The CD is also for sale via the DiN store for the modest sum of $10 (inc. postage).

The Wire editorial in the May 2001 issue reads as follows:

"With next month's issue of The Wire, all subscribers worldwide will receive a free copy of Index 01, an exclusive, one-off compilation showcasing the roster of UK electronica label DiN.

Specially compiled for The Wire by DiN label boss Ian Boddy, the CD features 15 tracks, including material by Chris Carter, Markus Reuter, Arc and Dub Atomica, in a 74 minute trance - mix that moves through analogue synth odysseys, retooled industrial culture beatdowns and glitch - ridden dubscapes. The CD is being produced in a strictly limited edition pressing and will only be available free to subscribers with next month's issue."
